Color Wheel Template

Procedure: Time:
Do Now/Hook: 5 mins
- Class separates into 3 groups
- They each get a pack of skittles to sort into groups of their
respective colors, on a template of the color wheel
- Competition

Direct Instruction/Modeling: 10 mins

- Introduction of the color wheel (PPT)
- Which colors are primary, secondary and complementary?
- Primary colors are the parents of the color wheel!
- To teach complementary colors, I’ll be using an optical illusion.
- A red dot sits in the middle of the screen. Students will be asked to
stare at the dot for 30 seconds, then to look at the whiteboard/
white surface. If it’s correct, they should see the afterimage of a
green dot.
- This can then segue into my explanation of complementary colors,
which are colors on the opposite ends of the color wheel.
- Show some examples of art that only uses primary
colors/complementary colors. (I have some pieces? I don’t know if
I should use my own artwork?)

Student Practice/Application: 20 mins

- Each student is asked to take a skittle that is their favorite color and
spread out through the classroom
- Once they’ve done that, we play a different version of mogo mogo,
where I will play music and ask them to walk around.
- When I call out ‘Primary’, students must find a partner that has a
primary color
- When I call out ‘Secondary’, students must find a partner that has a
secondary color
- When I call out ‘Complementary’, students must pair up with their
complementary color.
- The game goes on, until only 2 students are left.
- The game can be played again, as the students are asked to change
