SECTION A
1. The following table shows the number (in thousands) of newspapers printed by a publisher for a
particular week:
35 38 41 42 46 39 59
(a) It was discovered that the printing press had a problem where some page 2's were only
printed on half the page.
(i) Give THREE reasons why it would be necessary to examine a sample of the
papers published rather than examine the entire production (the population).
[3 marks]
(ii) State TWO differences between a cluster sample and a stratified random sample
in this situation. [4 marks]
(iii) Using the stratified random sampling technique, calculate to the nearest whole
number, the number of papers that will be selected from Monday's production if
a sample of 5000 papers will be examined. [3 marks]
(b) Draw a WELL LABELLED pie chart showing the daily production of the newspaper,
using a radius of 4 centimetres, and giving the angles to the nearest whole number.
[6 marks]
(c) Calculate
(ii) the standard deviation of the daily production of the newspaper. [5 marks]
Total 25 marks
2. The table below shows the average daily travelling times, x minutes, taken by the 156 persons at
a certain workplace to travel from home to work everyday.

(a) Construct the cumulative distribution table for these data. [4 marks]
(b) On the answer graph sheet provided, draw the cumulative frequency curve to show the
information from the cumulative distribution table in (a) above. [4 marks]
(i) the number of persons who take less than 35 minutes to travel from home to work
[2 marks]
(ii) the median of the times taken to travel from home to work [2 marks]
(iii) the inter-quartile range of the times taken to travel from home to work.
[3 marks]
(d) Draw the box and whisker plot to show this information. [3 marks]
(e) Calculate an estimate for the mean time taken to travel to work. [5 marks]

SECTION B
3. (a) A box contains 8 red candles and 12 green candles, all identical except for the colour.
(i) A candle is randomly selected from the box. Determine the probability that the
candle is green. [2 marks]
(ii) THREE candles are randomly taken from the box. Using R to represent a red
candle, and G to represent a green candle,
b) determine the probability that exactly TWO red candles are taken.
[3 marks]
(b) Two events A and B are such that P(A) = 0.5 , P(B) = 0.40 and P(A n B) = 0.12 .
(c) In a language club, 45% of the students study French, 25% of the students study Spanish,
and 12% of the students study both French and Spanish.
(iii) studies French given that the student also studies Spanish. [2 marks]
(d) The number of referrals of patients made to a heart specialist on any given day is a
variable represented by X The probability distribution for X is given by

(b) For EACH of the following experiments, state, with reason, whether it may be modelled
by a binomial distribution.
(i) A bag contains four yellow discs, three blue discs and two white discs, all identical
except for colour. A disc is chosen at random, its colour noted and it is replaced
in the bag. This is done three times. [2 marks]
(ii) A bag contains five yellow discs and four blue discs. A disc is chosen at random
without replacement. This is done three times.

(iii) A bag contains five yellow discs and four blue discs. A disc is chosen at random,
its colour is noted and it is returned to the bag. This is done three times.

(c) A blood collection agency has ruled that it would not take blood from persons with
tattoos. It is believed that 40% of the persons that want to donate blood have tattoos.
(i) A group of 40 persons came to the blood collection agency to give blood.
Determine the expected number of them that will be turned away because they
have tattoos? [2 marks]
(ii) A group of 7 persons are waiting to give blood. Calculate the probability that
(d) The mass of a small loaf of bread is normally distributed with a mean of 480 g and a
standard deviation of 20 g. Calculate the probability that the mass of a loaf of bread,
selected at random, is between 465 g and 500 g. [6 marks]

5. (a) The scores on a test may be modelled by a normal distribution. A random sample of 6
scores is given below:
40 44 50 30 46 48
(ii) Test at the 5% significance level, the null hypothesis that the mean score is 45
against the alternative hypothesis that the mean score is less than 45.
(b) In 180 tosses of a pair of dice, the sum of 9 on two faces occurred 12 times. A test at the
5% significance level was carried out to determine whether the dice were biased to give
fewer 9s than expected.
(i) Calculate the probability of getting a sum of 9 when a pair of fair dice is tossed.
