Age, x in years 0 – 20 20 – 40 40 – 50 50 – 70 70 – 80 80 – 100

Number of persons 39 31 40 50 25 15

(a) State the boundaries and class width of the interval 50 – 70. [3 marks]

(b) For the persons living in the district, determine an estimate of

(i) the mean age [4 marks]

(ii) the median age [4 marks]

(iii) the number of persons who are 60 years or older. [3 marks]

2. A survey of 200 families known to be regular TV viewers was carried out. They were asked which
of the three TV channels they watched most during an average week. Their replies are summarised
in the following table along with the region in which they live.

Channel Region
Watched Total
Most North East South West

USA 32 16 40 22 110

Oxygen 7 10 25 8 50

CNN 12 6 10 12 40

Total 51 32 75 42 200

(a) Determine the probability that a family chosen randomly

(i) lives in the West [2 marks]

(ii) watches Oxygen and lives in the West [3 marks]

(iii) watches USA given that the person lives in the North [3 marks]

(iv) watches CNN or lives in the West. [3 marks]

(b) Two families are selected randomly. Assuming the selections are independent, determine
the probability that

(i) BOTH live in the North [3 marks]

(ii) ONLY one watches CNN [3 marks]

(iii) none watches Oxygen. [3 marks]
