10 Covid patients
die in Siliguri

SILIGURI, 14 AUGUST
A day after the town report-
ed a single death of a Covid
patient, 10 such patients died
in Siliguri in the last 24 hours.
Four of the deceased were
residents of areas under the
Siliguri Municipal Corporation
(SMC) and another from rural
area of the Siliguri Sub Divi-
sion. A 45-year-old resident of
Ward 20 died in the Desun
(Covid) Hospital last night,
while another woman, a res-
ident of Ward 15, died there
early this morning.
An 86-year-old person from
Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar
district also died there last night.
He had been undergoing treat-
ment there since 7 August,
while another person from the
same district died today. He
was 62. A 62-year-old resident
of Islampur in North Dinajpur
also died in the same hospi-
tal today, along with an 80-year-
old resident of Bagdogra.
Three patients, a 50-year-
old resident of Siliguri, a 79-
year-old person from Mal-
bazaar in Jalpaiguri district and
a 50-year-old resident of Kis-
hanganj in Bihar died in Dr
Chhang's (Covid) Hospital.
A resident of Sukantanagar
in Ward 38 under the SMC was
"brought dead" at the North
Bengal Medical College and
Hospital yesterday. His swab

As the nation observes the
74th Independence Day
tomorrow and is already
marking the first anniver-
sary month of the abrogation
of Article 370 that scrapped
the special status given to
Jammu and Kashmir, positive
reactions continue to flow in
about the new changes and
the results that are now
expected from the historic
move.
When on 5 August 2019,
Union Home Minister Amit
Shah announced in Parlia-
ment the abrogation of Arti-
cle 370, the vast silent major-
ity of the state heaved a sigh
of relief, while this sense of
relief emanated from the
fact that the controversial
article laid the foundations
of deprivation and margin-
alization of various sections
of society, while at the same
time ensuring hegemony of
a few dominant families in
the state, observers have
said.
"One of the major advan-
tages of the abrogation of the
Article 370 has been the com-
plete integration of the erst-
while state of Jammu and
Kashmir with the rest of the
country," a political analyst
in north Bengal says.
"Article 370 had proved to
be an inhibitor for the growth
and development of the
region and with its annulment,
the region is witnessing a
rapid pace of all-round growth
and development. Several
indications are showing that
the region is witnessing a
fast pace of all-round growth
post-Article 370. The newly-
carved Union Territory of
Jammu and Kashmir has
started witnessing an
unprecedented level of growth
Covid-19.
Meanwhile, 55 cases have
been recorded in Darjeeling
district, and 35 cases in the SMC
area. Sources said 24 persons
were tested positive in the
civic body area in Darjeeling
district. Naxalbari registered
eight cases, Matigara 17, two
at Phansidewa, three in Sukna
and one case at Sukhia Pokhari.
66 cases in Malda
Malda reported 66 new
cases of Covid-19 in tests con-
ducted in the VRDL in the
Malda Medical College and
Hospital last night, taking the
number of total affected to over
3600 in the district, with 18
deaths so far and more than
800 active cases.
S Dinajpur takes stock
of situation
In South Dinajpur, a meet-
ing of the district Covid task
force was held at the district
collectorate office today, where
discussions were held on var-
ious issues, including partial
lockdown in the district. The
meeting decided to continue
with the restrictions as officials
claimed that the same had
worked and good results were

With the abrogation of
Article 370, the people of
J&K now stand on the same
pedestal as those in the rest
of the country with the same
rights, benefits and prospects.
Women and weaker sections
like those belonging to the
scheduled caste and tribe,
West Pakistan refugees and
safai karmacharis now have
equal democratic and eco-
nomic rights.
"The best thing about the

Darjeeling patient tests
negative
A 55-year-old Covid patient,
whom the police yesterday
nabbed after he had fled ear-
lier, tested negative for the virus
today. The man from Chotta
Hatta Gaon in the Rimbick-
Lodhoma constituency in
Darjeeling had been missing
for 11 days after he fled while
being taken to a hospital in an
ambulance on 2 August.

of 65 central schemes, includ-
ing pension, insurance,
income support and loans
have been fully implement-
ed with 100 percent coverage.
Further, all toll posts in
Jammu and Kashmir have
been abolished from 1 Jan-
uary 2020, further giving
respite to the residents of the
region," he says.
According to him, the
focus of the current admin-
istration there has been on
timely completion of projects
and delivery of benefits.
"Priority has been given to
ensure that the government
runs in a rule-based manner
with no arbitrariness or delays.
Accountability is being
ensured at all levels. The
constitutional change
of the abrogation of Article
370 has opened new vision
of development in the region,"
he adds.

MP meets
flood victims

Balurghat's BJP MP, Sukanta
Majumder, today visited Kha-
rasrota village on the banks
of the Sui river in Surun -1
Gram Panchayat in Itahar.
Though in North Dinajpur
district, the area falls under the
Balurghat Parliamentary con-
stituency.
He met families whose
houses were swept away by the
swollen river and handed
over relief materials, includ-
ing rice and dal, to the affect-
ed families. He also assured
them embankments in the vil-
lage in 2021 "after the BJP gov-
ernment is formed in the
state."
The Sui river is a branch of
the Mahananda river and
flows through the Kharasro-
ta village.
"In the absence of an
embankment, around five to
six houses are eaten up by the
river in Kharasrata village
every year. Yet the state gov-
ernment has no taken steps
to save the village. Leaders of
the ruling party only pocket-
ed money meant for the relief
of the people here," Mr Majum-
dar said.
