FLUID MECHANICS SECOND SEMESTER, SY2019-2020

PROBLEM SET 2
Due: May 2020

1. When you are sunbathing on a stony beach, why do the stones hurt your feet less when
you’re standing in deep water?

2. A steel tank filled with Helium gas does not rise in air, but a balloon containing the same
Helium rises easily. Why?

3. A cylindrical wooden buoy, of height of 3 m and mass 80 kg, floats vertically in water. If its
specific gravity is 0.80, how much will it be depressed when a body of mass 10 kg is placed
on its upper surface?

4. A man whose weight is 667 N and whose density is 980 kg/m 3 can just float in water with his
head above the surface with the help of a life jacket which is wholly immersed. Assuming
that the volume of his head is 1/15 of his whole volume and that the specific gravity of the
life jacket is 0.25, find the volume of the life jacket.

5. A sealed tank containing seawater to a height of 11.0 m also contains air above the water at
a gauge pressure of 3.00 atm. Water flows out from the bottom through a small hole.
Calculate the efflux speed of the water.

6. Consider an airplane with a total wing surface of 100 m 2. At a certain speed the difference in
air pressure below and above the wings is 4% of atmospheric pressure. Show that the lift on
the airplane is 400,000 N.
