Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is an effective way of talking with people about Change.

Concept
The spirit of Motivational Interviewing
1. Partnership
Work collaboratively and avoid the “expert” role.
2. Acceptance
Respecting the client’s autonomy, potential, strengths, and perspective.
3. Compassion
Keep the client’s best interests in mind.
4. Evocation
The best ideas come from the client.

Core Skills
1. Open Question :The counsellor should ask open question and not close question to get
more information.

2. Affirmation :Positive statements


Example:
 Awards
 Attempts
 Achievements
 Accomplishments anything positive about client’s.

3.Reflection :Understanding what the client is thinking and feeling then saying it back to the
client.

4.Summary :A long reflection of more than one client statement.


Technique :
The four process
1. Engaging – The process of establishing a trusting and mutually respectful
relationship.
The client feeling welcome, comfortable, understood, exceeding expectation, having
mutual goal and feeling hopeful.

2. Focusing – An ongoing process of seeking and maintaining direction.


 Setting an agenda
 Goals, priorities
 Clear direction

3. Evoking – Eliciting a client’s awn motivation for change


- Eliciting change talk (client speech that favors movement in the direction of
change)

4. Planning – Developing a specific change plan that the client agrees to and is willing to
implement planning.

- Specific
