unlock some important words.

13 If we have a sentence: To get water from the deep well, you need to have a
pail attached to a strong rope.

14 What does well in this sentence mean? Open your dictionaries and be the
first one to write the correct answer on a sheet of paper.

15 What is the correct answer? (PAUSE). A well is a pit or a hole sunk into
the
earth to reach a supply of water. Did you get the correct answer? Great!

16 Now, listen to this:

17 MSC FADE UP 3 SEC, FADE UNDER

18 There were two students, Joaquin and Christina. They were both trapped
in an abandoned well. This well was empty and the two need to go out of
the well. The characters need to have at least three strengths to overcome
their problem of being trapped.

19 Do you know what strength means? Look for its meaning in the
dictionary. (PAUSE) Yes. It refers to the quality of being strong.

20 If you are one of the characters in the situation, what strengths should
you
possess for you to get out from the well? (PAUSE)

21 You can be strong, resilient, persistent, and brave.

22 These are great attitudes that Joaquin and Christina need to have to
overcome their problems.

23 From the given situation, do you observe how the word well and strength
are being defined? (PAUSE)

24 You may recall that well in our sentence is a pit or a hole into the earth
to reach a supply of water, and strength is a quality of being strong.

25 However, these two words might be interpreted in some other way such
that the word well may represent as a challenge for the two characters.

26 The word strength on the other hand may refer to the positive attitude
that
they should possess to get out of the well.

27 Now you know that certain words may have different definitions and
uses.

28 MSC FADE UP FOR 5 SECS , FADE UNDER

29 HOST: That was teacher Gaysha, our English teacher.

31 HOST: Now, we are all geared up for our lesson proper.

To further explain to us our lesson for today let us hear from teacher
Miegel.
32 MSC FADE UP FOR 3 SECS, FADE UNDER

33 TEACHER 2: Thank you Teacher Cecille. Hello everyone.

34 You have learned a while ago that there are two ways to define a word.
That is the reason at times, we say something that might have different
interpretation.

35 Let us now open our module on Activity 1.2 (PAUSE). Do you see the
word inspiration?

36 You can see on the next column the two definitions of the word.

37 In column A it says something that brings on creative activity while on

column B it is motivation.

38 We call this definition as denotative meaning of the word as how

dictionary defines the word. Denotation is the literal precise definition
one can find in the dictionary.

39 Now let me ask you, what comes in your mind when you hear the word
inspiration?
40 (MSC 2 FADE IN 3 SEC, FADE OUT)

41 What is your inspiration in pursuing a course or getting good grades?

42 Yes, you may answer you want to pay back for all the sacrifices of your
parents.

43 Do you have any bad experience/s that you made as your inspiration to
do better in life?

44 (MSC 2 FADE IN 3 SEC, FADE OUT)

45 Indeed! Some of you might have been bullied for being poor and wearing
tattered clothes or uniform in going to school. This unfortunate
experience may have pushed you to persevere in life.

46 Let’s talk about your feelings. How do you feel when you hear the word
inspiration?

47 (MSC 2 FADE IN 3 SEC, FADE OUT)

48 Am I right if I say that you feel motivated whenever you see your crush?
And that you make your crush as an inspiration to go to school and do

better?

49 These are what we call connotations.

50 SFX LASER SNEAK IN, SNEAK OUT

51 Connotation is the positive and negative association of the word and the
emotional shades of the meaning of a word

52 I hope it is now clear with you, that when you say denotation it is direct,
literal, and precise meaning of a word from a dictionary. They have the
same
first letter D= denotation and dictionary.

53 On the other hand, connotation is the range of positive and negative

thoughts you have on a word and the emotion you feel about a word.

54 Both principal methods of describing the meaning of words are essential in

our everyday dealings with other people, in understanding text being read
and even in listening to varied means of information.

55 (MSC 2 FADE IN 3 SEC, FADE OUT)

56 Do you want to listen to the story, Orpheus? Once you listen to the
story tomorrow you may we be able to use these two- denotation and
connotation to fully understand and enjoy reading the whole story.

57 MSC UP FOR 5 SECS AND UNDER

you already understand our lesson about denotation and connotation.

67 SFX BELL AFTER 20 SEC.

68 Time’s up! Are you ready to check your answer? ……… Great!

lacking
Strength

71 Did you get the same definitions? (2 SEC.) Perfect!
