GRADATION AND
AWARENESS CHART

I want to tell you about the
Route to Clear,1 the Bridge, which
we call the Classification, Gradation
and Awareness Chart.
The Gradation Chart is an in-
struction book on self. It's not an
instruction book on the body or
how you should be a good boy or a
good girl in society. It is an instruc-
tion book on self.
By studying one lesson at a time
and achieving one improvement at a
time as outlined on the Grade Chart
you can learn about yourself, what
you are going to do, where you can
go, and what your capabilities are.
If you did that in an orderly
fashion you would be able to
advance up to a very high state.
There is an old mystic idea that
there is a chasm or abyss between
the existence the world is on now
and a higher plateau of existence,
and that many people in trying to
make it across fell into the abyss.
Well, we've built a bridge which is
all complete now and it can be
walked. It goes from one state of
existence to another higher state of
existence. This is the Gradation
Chart.
But there's one point — you
have to walk on the bridge. You
wouldn't think you'd have to tell
people this. You would think you
could say to somebody, "You can
cross the Grand Canyon as long as

you walk across the Bridge!" You
would think that is enough. But, by
George, somebody'll go down to
the edge and walk off into thin air.
So the Gradation Classification
plan is a prevention of that kind of
thing. It says "There is a bridge. If
you're going to go across from where
you are now to where you are going
to arrive, why you go across on the
Bridge. " And you might say Ethics
(as you will connect with in organi-
zations sooner or later) is the traffic
cop who says, "That's the bridge —
that's the abyss." That's about all
it amounts to.
This plan has been worked out
for quite a long period of time. It's
been very successful.
As the name implies, there are
three aspects to the Chart: Classifi-
cation, Gradation and Awareness.
GRADATION
What does gradation mean? It
means there are grades, as to a road,
or steps which are a gradual grade
up.
Life is improved on a gradient; a
little, then a little more, a little
more and a little more.
When you tell a person about too
big a jump or that you expect him
to make t o o big an advance in too
little time, you give him a loss. He
doesn't gain, he loses.

A HISTORY OF THE CHART
The Grade Chart, as a chart, was first
released in 1965 by L. Ron Hubbard. Yet
it expresses an idea that has been basic to
Scientology and Dianetics since their very
beginning: Man can achieve a far higher
level of experience and activity than he
has ever known, as long as he has a
gradient, step by step way of getting there
- a Bridge!
Ron announced the Bridge way back
in 1950. At that time the Bridge had two
steps: Release and Clear.
It was one year later that Ron announ-
ed the third and final step: OT, or Opera-
ting Thetan.
Today, almost a quarter of a century
later, that is still the Bridge. The enclosed
Grade Chart is a remarkable example of
the stability and timelessness of that
Bridge! From Human Being up to Release.
Then to Clear. Then to OT. Step by step,
so everyone can make it.
That was Ron's design from the very
beginning. In the 15 years between 1950
to 1965, he devoted his time to the re-
search and development of processes and
procedures to help people reach those
states.
Ron, himself, wrote of this research in
July 1973:
The subject of Scientology is to some
degree developed in reverse order. The
task was to undercut the current level of
Man and this was the general target.
Therefore one finds the higher levels
publicly spoken of most frequently in the
earlier books and tapes (between '51 and
'55). In seeking full application to others
and attainment for them of their poten-
tials it was necessary to codify the
materials and develop processes for them.
By 1965 Ron had developed a very
large body of data, of practical processes
and methods. The amazing breakthrough
of that year was Ron's discovery that

these processes fell into a number of
groups, and that these groups were nat-
urally aligned into a logical sequence
which helped people go Clear even faster!
It is this sequence that we now call the
Expanded Grades of Release. So the vast
majority of the processes that make up
each Grade were in use long before the
Grades were codified and released.
Then Ron developed Power Processes
and finalized the Clearing Course. Over
the next few years, from materials both
old and new, he developed and released
the first 6 levels of the OT Course, finally
realeasing OT VII in 1970.
Changes in the Grade Chart from 1965
onward have been refinements and expan-
sion of the same basic principles: Release,
then Clear, then OT.
In 1968 we had the release of Class
VIII (100% Standard Tech and handling
of OTs). In 1969 Ron released the stream-
lined Standard Dianetics. In 1971 the
~tl training levels of Class IX, X, XI
and XII were released (handling of special
OT processes). In 1972 Expanded Diane-
tics was released (Dianetics specially
applied to handle that which needs to be
handled for a person).
The enclosed new Grade Chart includes
all Scientology training and processing
levels as they are today delivered in
Churches around the world. And yet it is
still HUMAN BEING TO RELEASE,
THEN TO CLEAR, THEN TO OT ! !
In this way Ron built the Grade
Chart, and builds it still. All to make the
steps of RELEASE, CLEAR AND OT
easier, more efficient, more effective . . .
to broaden the Bridge so that all men,
from the least able to the most able and
enlightened, can cross it and achieve the
most treasured state of all: The state of
being wholly oneself, fully able, infinitely
aware, and TOTALLY FREE!

day. Yesterday I arrived in L.A. What I
did in one day would amaze some. If
you're putting stops on getting to L.A.
-don't do it. Blow them off. I've been
Grade IV for almost a month now-l
should have been here much sooner. If
I had only gotten a glimpse of how clean
this space was, how tranquil it is, that
alone would have blown the stops.
I was in Boston the other day, feeling
all the suppression in the space-then
getting this urgency-it was a matter of
survival you know. I just left a note say-
ing what I was doing, packed, boxed all
my things up, rented my apartment,
managed to get a free ticket here, and was
on the plane and really FLYING here.
When I got here it was like finally getting
home.
Thanks to all the staff at ASHO and
the Advanced Organization. We're lucky
Ron has made all this possible.

the grade chart until I took my first step
onto it. Boy, did I grasp it then and
wouldn't stop to let anything turn my

it shows him the right stages to prevent his hav-
ing a tremendous loss.
AWARENESS LEVELS
The second aspect of this chart is the states
of Awareness.
We see along the bottom there are negative
(minus) states of awareness and then up through
the middle of the Chart are the positive states
of awareness. A person is at any one of these
awareness levels and, no matter where he is on
the chart, is most likely to become aware of the
next level up only. So this is a map of what the
individual can become aware of.
Need of Change at -0.4 gives you the point
where a person can become a Scientologist. He
is aware of the need of change.
From there a person becomes aware of the
next level, then the next and continues to move
up this line of awareness levels as he gets trained
and processed?
Eventually he moves up to the point where his
own purposes start coming out straight for the
first time. Then he gets a Clearing of his entire
past and of other purposes, and a realization of
himself. Then he goes into a state where he is
capable of power.
When we look all this over we find that is just
one column on this chart. It is paralleled on both
sides by more columns.
Clear is followed by the state of OT (Operat-
ing Thetan),5 attained in sections. An individual
can operate totally independently of his body,
whether he has one or not. An OT is now him-
self. He is not dependent on the universe around
him.
The left-hand side of the chart describes the
very important steps of training on which one
gains the knowledge and abilities necessary to
deliver the Grades of Release to another. The
skill acquired is a discipline in living and a know-
how of the parts of life.
These things are what this Chart describes. It
is a guide for the individual from the point
where he first becomes dimly aware of a Scien-
tologist or Scientology and shows him how and
where he should move up in order to make it.
A lot of people are making it and have made
it since this Chart came into existence. We're
having no difficulty getting people to attain
these various conditions or get trained.
Scientology contains the entire map for get-
ting the individual through all the various points
on this gradation scale and for getting him across
the Bridge to a higher state of existence.
Use it and have a very happy passage across the
Bridge.

CLASSIFICATION
Classification means that we require certain
actions to have been done or conditions to have
been attained before an individual is classified on
that level and we let him go on.
With the chart we have paralleled the Aware-
ness levels with various techniques and activities.
As one moves up the Chart the conditions des-
cribed by the awareness levels are attained.
An individual moving up this Chart one step
after the other does make these various condi-
tions and attainments and finally arrives at the
top.

TWO ROUTES UP THE CHART

On the right side of the chart there are various
steps called the States of Release.3There are five
States of Release (Grades 0-IV) up to Power
Release (Grade V). Above this is a Whole Track4
Release (Grade VI) and above that is a state we
call Clear.
