Ordinary Method of Slice/ Fellenious Method

Here the steps of calculation are given-

Step 1: Calculation of weight of the slices:
Slice-1: Weight = height* width* g
Mid height of the slice = 6.23 ft
Width = 10 ft
g = 124 pcf
So, Weight= 6.23*10*124 =7733.57 lb

Slice-2: Weight= 15.775*10*124 = 19561.397 lb

All the weight of individual slices are given in table, Next page.

Step 2: Angle with the tangent, a

The angle between the mid-point of the slice and the line
drawn from the center of the circle represents the angle of the slice with the tangent, a .

The following figure shows the detailed information of slice 3 showing,dimensions, N (Normal force) and T (Tensile
Step 3: Calculation of arc length, Dl :
For each slice, Arc length, L= Width/ Cos a
For slice-1, Arc length, Dl = 10/cos (-38.92) = 12.85 ft Figure 4.13 : Angle wit
All the values of arc length, L is shown in table, next page

Step 4:Calculation of Pore water pressure:

As we have to consider the most critical case, so, we take the water table to be available at the slope surface.
So, pore water pressure,
m = 62.4*6.24 * cos2 17.885 = 352.47 psf
In the same way, the pore pressure can be computed for each slice and are shown in table, next page

Step 5:Calculation of Normal force, N:

Similarly, N of all the slices are computed and are shown in table, in Appendix ‘C1’.

Step 6:Calculation of Tensile force, T:

Similarly, T of all the slices are computed and are shown in table, in Appendix ‘C1’.
Step 7:Calculation of Factor of safety, F.S:

F.S=73169.32/49962.80 = 1.46
ormal force) and T (Tensile force).
