Nitrogen (N2): Control Measure
Nitrogen can cause
injury or death
Asphyxiation is the state
or process of being de-
prived of oxygen, which
can result in unconscious-
ness or death, suffocation.

Cryogenic relating to the

production of very low
temperatures.

Nitrogen (N2) gas is known as the "Silent Killer’’

It cannot be seen. has no colour. no smell no
taste. It kills without warning. There is risk of
asphyxiation if a worker inhales to nitrogen gas.

The vapor of liquid nitrogen can rapidly freeze

skin tissue and eye fluid, resulting in cold burns,
frostbite, and permanent eye damage.

Control Measure
• Use only correct fittings for N2 at Utility sta-
tions.
• Nitrogen valves at Utility Station shall be
chained & locked (LOTO).
• Install signage & barricade around the area
purging activities.
• Only trained competent person are allow to
operate nitrogen equipment.
• Use whip checks for N2 hose connection
• Follow Permit To Work (PTW) & Task Risk As-
sessment (TRA) requirements strictly.

NO WORK IS SO URGENT THAT WE CANNOT TAKE THE TIME TO DO IT SAFELY
