ROLE AND BARRIERS OF INFORMATION LITERACY

Rygene Gomez of Grade 10-St.Peter

According to the American Library Association, information literacy is a set of abilities

requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate,
evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. It also helps students to sort through
the data and interpret it intelligently through the use of the internet instead of using books
while researching. Online class is new to many, it is exciting or nerve-wrecking to others.
Students are often misled, paving the way to misconceptions in statistical reasoning.
Previous studies have indicated that integration of technology has a positive impact on
addressing misconceptions and improving students’ statistical reasoning.

I stated the role of information literacy to students in the first paragraph. It is also concluded
that incorporating information is useful due to its advantages although there could be some
obstacles that need to be overcome. Frankly, our country lacks appropriate
infrastructure(modern telecommunication equipment and connectivity) and professionals
with the appropriate skills to design, operate and manage the modern information systems
that are formal and technologically based. Furthermore, students might seem to experience
a lot of struggle to understand a certain information and to explore a lesson thus this will lead
to lack of knowledge and motivation. Also, in the internet there is a lot of bad information to
sort through when performing research. It’s not always easy to determine which are good,
and which are not. First we have to learn that all information is created equal. For instance,
content on the Internet continually grows, but it doesn’t always come from credible sources.
It assists students to recognize misleading or false information.
