What I Need to Know

Hello! You know that simple calculation is part

of our daily life? We measure and convert
measurements while we are sewing. A dressmaker
used English and Metric System while having
performance. The four fundamental operations such
as Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction
(MDAS) is involved in measuring and converting
measurements.
Therefore, it is imperative to know how to
convert and perform simple calculations in measuring
the materials needed in sewing. This module provides
different activities that will help you to perform
mathematical computations.

Learning Competencies:
1. Apply the system of measurement.
2. Perform simple calculations based on the job requirement.
3. Demonstrate accurate reading measurements.

Learning objectives:
1. Convert English to Metric System and vice versa.
2. Perform simple calculations based on the job requirement.

What’s In
CONNECT MY PREVIOUS LEARNING

Let us see if you can still remember the

discussion last time. Answer the following items.

Read the statement carefully. Choose from the box the word best describes the
statements. Write your answers on your notebook.

Seat Waist Shirt Length Shoulder L-Square

Leg hole Bust Metric System Sleeve Tape Measure

1. This is a system where the unit of measurement is centimeter

2. It measures across the back of the neck from the socket of one shoulder to the
socket of the other shoulder.
3. It measures from the shoulder tip point down to the desired length.
4. A 60” long tape. One side has inches and the other side has centimeters.
5. It is used on lapel, pants and skirt contours calibrated on both sides.
6. It is taken from the nape down the center back to the desired length.
7. It is taken around the body with the tape measure passing over the fullest part
of the bust at the back and over to the apex.
8. It is taken around the smallest part of the waistline.
9. It is s taken around the fullest part of the bottom.
10. Hip or _____ taken around the fullest part of the hip (buttocks) with two fingers
inserted under the tape measure.

MEASUREMENT AND CONVERSIONS

You have to remember that simple calculation is an

easy mathematical application used to determine the
accurate measurement of the body parts, length and
width of materials and cost needed to create an apparel.

This is the process in which the four fundamental

operations (MDAS) is involved.

In measuring the length and width of materials

needed such as fabrics, we also need the use of the Metric
Measurement System.

It is important to perform simple calculations accurately

to produce a good and accurate result. Here are the
following measurements in English System and converted
into Metric System and vice versa

Metric Conversion Chart for Fabric and Sewing

1/4 inch = 0.635 centimeter 7 inches = 17.78 centimeters
1/2 inch = 1.27 centimeters 7.5 inches = 19.05 centimeters
5/8 inch = 1.59 centimeters 8 inches = 20.32 centimeters
3/4 inch = 1.905 centimeters 8.5 inches = 21.59 centimeters
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters 9 inches = 22.86 centimeters
1.5 inches = 3.81 centimeters 9.5 inches = 24.13 centimeters
2 inches = 5.08 centimeters 10 inches = 25.4 centimeters
2.5 inches = 6.35 centimeters 10.5 inches = 26.67 centimeters
3 inches = 7.62 centimeters 11 inches = 27.94 centimeters
3.5 inches = 8.89 centimeters 12 inches = 30.48 centimeters
4 inches = 10.16 centimeters 13 inches = 33.02 centimeters
4.5 inches = 11.43 centimeters 1 yard = 0.9144 meters
5 inches = 12.7 centimeters 2 yards = 1.8288 meters
5.5 inches = 13.97 centimeters 3 yards = 2.7432 meters
6 inches = 15.24 centimeters 4 yards = 3.6576 meters
6.5 inches = 16.51 centimeters 5 yards = 4.572 meters
Example:
1. How many are there in 100 centimeters width of fabric?

Answer:

a. Given: 1 inch = 2.54

Width of fabric = 100cm
Equivalent of an inch to cm

b. Calculations 100cm = 39.37 inches

2.54

COST NEEDED

Example:
You need to buy a 60 inches length of fabric to be used in making a dress to your
customer. You have known that the cost of the fabric that you are going to use is
P5.00 per centimeter. How much will you need to buy it?

Step I – Convert the 60 inches length of fabric into centimeters.

60 inches
X 2.54 cm
152.4 cm

Step II – Multiply the cost per centimeter to the length of fabric converted.
152.4 cm
X Php 5.00
Php 777.00

It is important to know the Mathematical Conversion of
English System to Metric System and vice versa. As a
dressmaker it used to determine the accurate
measurement of the materials to be used whether in
English or Metric System. If you needed the
measurement in English System and the given is in
Metric System, at least it is easy for you to convert it.
