Method- OARS
• Open-ended questions
• Affirm their perceptions of the behavior
• Reflect on their responses
• Summarize what they are saying- Repeat what
they have said (out loud) in an organized manner
so they hear their own interpretations
Assess
• Determine health status
BMI, waist circumference, quality of life, self-efficacy,
physical activity vital sign
Advise
• Ask permission to give advice
• Provide evidence-based information
• Give treatment options
Agree
• Come to an agreement on a treatment plan
• May take multiple visits to get an agreement
• Create SMART goals
Assist
• Provide motivation
• Give support- Find resources
• Identify and help overcome barriers
Rate how confident you are that you could be physically
active in each of the following situations:
•1. When I am tired
•2. When I am in a bad mood
•3. When I feel I don’t have time
•4. When I am on vacation
•5. When it is raining or snowing
•Likert Scale (1 to 5)
• 1.= not at all confident
• 2.= slightly confident
• 3.= moderately confident
• 4.= very confident
• 5.= extremely confident
