“What are the set of sieves that must be included?

3”, 1 ½”, ¾”, 3/8”, #4, #8, #16, #30, #50, #100
Example 1: The fine agg. with the FM=3.25 and the coarse
agg. with the FM=7.85 are available. Combine them in
such a way that the FM becomes 6.8

Let x = % of Fine Aggregate

100 - x = % of Coarse Aggregate

3.25 x + 7.85(100-x)
= 6.8
100
x = 23%

*23% of fine agg. and 77% of coarse agg. should be

mixed.

Maximum Aggregate Size and Nominal
Maximum Aggregate Size

Nominal Maximum Aggregate Size defined

as öne sieve size larger than the first size
to retain more than 10%.
Maximum Aggregate size is defined as the
smallest sieve size that requires 100 %
passing.
Example 2: The sieve analysis of a coarse aggregate is shown below.
Determine the maximum aggregate size nd the nominal maximum
aggregate size.

Maximum Aggregate size = 1”

Nominal Maximum Aggregate Size = 3/4”
