 1/ What is crystal?

Crystals are solids with special structure and in certain order. Crystals account
for 99% of the mussel crust in the form of infertility such as soil, rocks, minerals,
metals, etc.,

 2/ What is crystal growing?

Crystal growing is a scientific technique to create an environment with
conditions of temperature, pressure, impurities,… Crystal seed will be formed in
this environment and develop to be a crystal. The conditions for growing crystals is
depending on the features of each type of crystal. For different types of crystals,
there are different conditions for growing.

We choose alum to grow because it’s clean chemical and easy to grow.

To ensure the safety during growing crystals, we need to wear:
 Gloves
 Mask
 Blouse coat
- REQUIRED MATERIALS:
+ KAl(SO4)2.12H2O
+ KCr(SO4)2.12H2O
+ Water
+ Beaker
+ Stick, fishing line
+ Super glue
+ Thermometer
+ Balance
+ Amigan grid, tripod, acohol burner, tweezer
+ Glass rod, glass spoon, glass funnel
+ Filter paper
+ Styrofoam box
- PROCESS:
 Making seed crystal.
+ Use 90 acohol to clean the chemical materials carefully.
+ Weight 80g of KAl(SO4)2 and 20g of KCr(SO4)2 .
+ Measure 400ml of purified water in a beaker and heat it to 50C.
+ Pour the mixture of solute into a beaker and stir until it’s dissolve.
+ Allow the solution to cool to room temperature.
+ Filt it through the filted paper to remove any impurities.
+ When the solution returned to room temperature, place the beaker of
solution in a styrofoam box to reduce the effect of temperature, humidity
and the sunlight.
+ One day later, the crystal seeds are formed at the bottom. Pour the
solution into another container.
+ Select a beautiful and transparent small crystal. This will be your seed
crystal.
 Growing crystals.
+ Use super glue to tie the seed on a thin fishing line.
+ Carefully suspend your seed crystal from the stick into the cold
supersaturated solution in the middle of the container with
supersaturated solution.
+ Cover the container in whinh the crystal is growing with a piece of
cardboard in order to keep out dust.
+ Now we can only wait for the crystals to grow.
- NOTES:
 Avoid cooling fast your solution because the crystals will crystallize
chaos.
 The temperature of recrystallization should be controlled. Place your
growing crystal in a styrofoam box to reduce temperature fluctuations.
 Don’t touch the crystal surface with your bare-finger, it may affect the
crystal’s quality, especially transparency.
 Remove any tiny-crystal in your fishing line during growing crystal.
 If you have to about 1 day then use it to keep it but only for 4 5 hours, it
should be incubated for another 4 hours so that the germ won't be
crystallized by other germs form it.
 Resupersaturate the solution. This should be repeat regularly, especially
when your crystal gets larger.
