I. Read and circle True or False.

Nelson Mandela was born in July 18, 1918 in South Africa. His real name was Rolihlahla.
A teacher named him Nelson. He was South Africa’s first black president and the first
president elected in a democratic election that allowed all citizens (white and black) to
vote.
Mandela’s ethnic origin was Xhosa. He was a member of the Thembu royal family.
He atended Fort Hare University and the Universtity of Witwatersrand, where he studied
law. He became involved in politics and joined the ANC (South African National Party). He
was arrested different times during his years as an activist. In 1962, he was arrested,
convicted of treason, and sentenced to life imprisonment for leading a sabotaje campaign
against the apartheid government.
Mandela served 27 years of his prison sentence. An international campaign lobbied
for his realease. In 1990, Mandela was finally released. At his release, Mandela
participated in negotiations with South Africa’s president F.W. de Klerk put out an end to
apartheid and establish multirracial elections. In 1994 in the first of these elections,
Mandela was voted president at the head of the ANC.
