ABSTRACT

Iron and manganese are metals that occur frequently in elevated level in groundwater of
Bangladesh. The presence of iron and manganese in groundwater beyond the permissible limit is
now considered to be a major problem throughout the world. These problems are intense in the
context of Bangladesh as groundwater is a vital source for the safe drinking water supply.
Coagulation-flocculation is relatively simple and cost-effective, provided that chemicals are
available and dosage is adapted to the water composition. The aim of this study was to remove
the higher concentration of iron and manganese by coagulation-flocculation processes with
coagulants. In this study reviews various coagulants that have been used to remove Fe and Mn
containing groundwater such as (ferric chloride, ferrous sulfate, aluminum sulfate and Moringa
Oleifera seeds). In this study iron and manganese removal was observed as a function of
groundwater Fe and Mn concentration and the Fe and Mn higher concentration, greater was the
removal performance. Up to 99% Fe and 73% Mn removal was achieved through the
coagulation-flocculation process by ferric chloride doses at Fe (20 mg/l) and Mn (10 mg/l).
Besides that this study indicate that Moringa Oleifera is a natural coagulant and have also good
capability to removing Fe and Mn from water.
