 Causes and Effects of the Rise of Ride-Sharing Services in Dhaka City
Like most of the trends in countries flow to this side of the world by time, ride-sharing is also
no exception. Bangladesh witnessed a leap in ride-sharing space with the emergence of
Pathao and the entrance of Uber in Bangladesh market in late 2016 and it quickly became
popular. Exorbitant amount of fare and desire of faster commute with comfort has been the
key for the rise of the ride-sharing services in Dhaka city which resulted in employment of
thousands of people.

Exorbitant amount of fare asked by the auto rickshaw drivers is one of the reason for the rise
of ride-sharing in Dhaka city. Auto rickshaw drivers were blatant about their fares. They
would not abide by the rules described by BRTC. They would ask fare that were
unreasonable. Commuter had to wait for the drivers’ whim, but ride sharing has made it very
easy to get a vehicle to reach a destination.

Commuters desire for faster commute with comfort is another reason why ride-sharing has
been rising in Dhaka city. Average speed of a car is 14 km and a bike can go much faster.
That makes any ride sharing vehicle faster than a bus or an auto rickshaw. There is a factor of
comfort which is very important. Four persons can share a car and enjoy the comfort of a car
instead of hot and humid bus or auto rickshaw ride.

The rise of ride-sharing has employed thousands of drivers around the city. This came as a
blessing for many drivers who were previously unemployed. They are now self-employed via
Uber or Pathao. They are using it as a regular source of income and living their life in a
decent manner. This has made employment in Dhaka city go down as many people has joined
and a lot of people are thinking of joining because of high demand of drivers.

Ride-Sharing has been a blessing for our society. Commuter’s life has been easy since the
ride-sharing has come to their daily life. It has changed the lives of many unemployed people.
We can only hope for it to remain like this so that we do not have to worry about our daily
transportation.
