Time: 90 minutes Max Marks: 30
Note : Attempt all questions . All question carry equal marks:-

Q1:- Attempt any one. (6*1)

(a) A Pelton wheel is to be designed for the following specifications ;
Power (power or shaft)= 9560KW
Head= 350metres; Speed= 750r.p.m; Overall efficiency= 85%
Jet diameter not to exceed 1/6th of the wheel diameter
Determine the following;
(i) The wheel diameter
(ii) Diameter of the jet and
(iii) The number of jets required
Take CV=0.985, Speed ratio=0.45
(b) A Pelton wheel of 1.1 m mean bucket diameter works under a head of 500 m. The
runner vane angle at outlet is 15 o & its relative velocity is reduced over the bucket
by 15 % due to friction. If the diameter of jet is 100 mm and the water is to leave
the bucket without any whirl.Determine
(i) Rotational speed of wheel
(ii) Ratio of bucket speed to jet velocity
(ii) Impulsive force & power developed
(iii) Water power

Q2:- Attempt any one. (6*1)

(a) The following data refers to an inward flow reaction turbine.
Net head=86.4 m, speed of runner = 650 r.p.m. ; S.P. = 397 kW ; ratio of wheel width
to wheel diameter at inlet = 0.10 ; ratio of inner dia. To outer diameter = 0.5 ; flow
ratio 0.17 ; hydraulic efficiency= 95% ; overall efficiency = 85 % ; flow velocity =
constant & discharge is radial. Neglecting blockage by blades ,find the dimensions
and blade angles of the turbine.
(b) An inward flow reaction turbine has an exit diameter of 1 m & its breadth at inlet is
250 mm. If the velocity of flow at inlet is 2 m/s ,find the mass of water passing
through the turbine per second . Assume 10 % of the area of flow is blocked by
blade thickness. If the speed of the runner is 210 r.p.m. and guide blades makes an
angle of 10o to the wheel tangent ,draw the velocity triangles & find
(i) The runner vane angle at inlet
(ii) Velocity of wheel at inlet
(iii) The absolute velocity of water leaving the guide vanes
(iv) Relative velocity of water entering the runner blade

Q3:- Attempt any one (6*1)

a) A Kaplan turbine develops 24647.6 kW power at an average head of 39 m. Assuming

a speed ratio of 2, flow ratio of 0.6 , diameter of the boss equal to 0.35 times the
diameter of the runner and an overall efficiency of 90% ,calculate the diameter
,speed and specific speed of the turbine.
b) A jet of water moving with a velocity of 15 m/s and 100 mm diameter impinges at
the centre of a hemispherical vane. The linear velocity of vane is 5 m/s in the
direction of jet . Find the force exerted on the vane. How this force would change if
the jet impinges on a series of vanes attached to the circumference of a wheel

Q4:- Attempt any two (3*2)

(a) Explain degree of reaction .Also find out the degree of reaction for an actual reaction
turbine having radial discharge.
(b) A jet of water strikes a series of flat plates arranged on the periphery of a wheel.
Prove that the efficiency of this system is 50%.
(c) Explain the hydraulic efficiency, mechanical efficiency & overall efficiency in case of
Pelton turbine.

Q5:- Attempt any one (6*1)

(a) Find the force exerted by a jet of water on an unsymmetrical moving curved plate
when jet strikes tangentially at one of the tips. Also find the efficiency.

OR
(b) Find the force exerted on a series of radial curved vanes along with its efficiency.
