Q1 A double overhung pelton wheel unit is directly coupled to (10000 KW)

generator. Find the power developed by each runner, if the generator efficiency
is 94%.

Q2 An impulse turbine delivers a maximum horsepower of (19000) when

working under a head of (900m) and running at (600 rpm). The overall
efficiency of the turbine is (89%). Find the diameter of the jet and the mean
diameter of the wheel. (Take Cv=0.98).

Q3 A Pelton wheel has a tangential velocity of buckets of (15 m/s). The water is
being supplied under a head of (36 m) at the rate of (20 l/s). The buckets deflect
the jet through an angle of (160o). If the coefficient of velocity for the nozzle is
(0.98), find the horsepower produced by the wheel.

Q4 A single jet Pelton turbine is required to drive a generator develop (10000

KW). The available head at the nozzle is (760 m). Assume electric generator
efficiency of (95%), Pelton wheel efficiency of (87%), (Cv= 0.97), mean bucket
velocity is (0.46) of jet velocity, outlet angle of the buckets is (15 o) and the
relative velocity of water leaving the bucket is (0.85) of that at inlet, find;

1- The flow rate,

2- The jet diameter, and
3- The force exerted by the jet on the buckets.

Q5 A twin jet Pelton wheel is required to work under a head of (300m) and to
produce (8010 hp) when running at a speed of (600 rpm). Assuming overall
efficiency of (90%), coefficient of velocity as (0.86) and the ratio of vane speed
to jet speed of (0.47), find

1- Diameter of the jet,

2- Width of the buckets
3- Depth of the buckets, and
4- Number of buckets.

Q6 A Pelton wheel is to be selected to drive generator at (600 rpm). The water

jet is (75mm) in diameter and has a velocity of (100 m/s). With a blade angle of
(170o) and the ratio of vane to jet speeds of (0.47) and neglecting losses,
determine;

1- Mean diameter of the wheel,

2- Power developed by the turbine and,

3- Kinetic energy per unit weight remaining in the fluid.

Q7 A pelton wheel is supplied with water in the nozzle at a head of (150 m).
The velocity coefficient for the nozzle is (0.96). The relative velocity of water
while in contact with the buckets is turned through 150o, and is also reduced by
(15%) owing to friction losses. The required ratio of bucket to jet speed is
(0.47) and (0.8) of the energy imparted to the wheel, as determined by the
velocity diagrams, is available at the output shaft. The bucket circle diameter is
ten times the jet diameter. Find the jet and wheel diameter, and the speed of
rotation develop (200 hp) under these conditions.

Q8 The water available for a pelton wheel is (4m3/s) and the total head from
reservoir to nozzle is (250 m). The turbine has two runners with two jets per
runner. All the four jets have the same diameters. The pipe line is (3000m)
long. The efficiency of the power transmission through pipe is (91%) and the
efficiency of each runner is (90%). The velocity coefficient of each nozzle is
(0.975) and the coefficient of friction for the pipe is (0.018). Determine;

1- The horsepower developed by the turbine,

2- The diameter of the jet, and
3- The diameter of the pipe line.

Q9 A Pelton wheel driven by two similar jets transmit (3750 KW) to the shaft
of an electric generator when running at (375rpm). The head available at the
nozzle entry is (180m). The jets are tangential to a (1.45m) diameter circle of
the wheel. The relative velocity decreases by (10%) as the water traverses the
bucket. If the bucket exit angle is (165o), (Cv=0.98), and neglecting mechanical
losses, determine;

1- The hydraulic efficiency of the wheel,

2- The diameter of the jet, and
3- The overall efficiency of the wheel.

Q10 A Pelton wheel, working under a head of (500m) and the distance between
high level reservoir at the top of the mountains and the turbine is (1.6 Km). The
water is brought in a penstock having a diameter of (130 cm) connected to a
nozzle of (20 cm) diameter at the end. Find

1- Power of the jet, and

2- Total power available at the reservoir. Take the value of friction
coefficient (f=0.032) and assume suitable date.
