TUTORIAL SHEET-IV (Francis & Kaplan)

Q-1. A francis turbine has to be designed to develop 370 kW under a head of 70 m while running at speed
equal to 750 m.
Ratio of width of runner to the outer diameter of runner = 0.1
Ratio of inner diameter to the outer diameter = 0.5
Flow ratio = 0.15, Hydraulic efficiency = 95%, Mechanical Efficiency = 84%
Circumferential area occupied by thickness of vanes = 5%
Assuming velocity of flow constant, calculate guide vane angle at inlet and runner vane angles at inlet &
outlet.
Ans: 8.38°, 15.19°, 9.14°.

Q-2. A Francis turbine develops 160 kW under a head of 10 m and at a speed of 200 rpm and gives an
efficiency of 80%. The speed ratio is 0.3 and flow ratio is 0.9. The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine is 85%.
For radial discharge, find (a) the diameter of the wheel, (b) the width of the wheel at inlet, (c) the guide blade
angle at inlet, and (d) the wheel vane angle at inlet.
Ans: 0.401 m, 0.128 m, 32.42°, 38.86°.

Q-3. The following data refer to a Kaplan turbine

Diameter of boss = 0.4 times external diameter
Head = 8 m, Speed ratio = 2, Flow Ratio = 0.6, Speed = 80 rpm, Shaft power = 11 MW.
Find the overall efficiency of the turbine.
Ans: 79%

Q-4. A turbine with an overall efficiency of 85% is to be installed in a hydroelectric plant. The head and
discharge at the plant are 25 m and 45m3/s respectively. If the specific speed of the turbine is 230, determine
the unit speed, unit discharge and unit power.

Q-5. Explain the phenomenon of governing in Turbines. How it is achieved in francis turbine.
Q- 6. Explain the Characteristics curves of hydraulic turbines.
Q-7. Write down about the Compressors, fans and blowers. Describe various types of compressors and their
applications.
