1. With a neat sketch, define turbo machine and briefly explain the
principle parts of turbo machine.
2. Give the comparison between positive displacement machine and
turbo machine.
3. Briefly explain the specific speed of turbine and the specific speed
of a centrifugal pump.
4. A turbine of model of 1:10 develops 2KW power under a head of
6m at 500rpm. Find the power developed by the prototype under a
head of 40m. Also find the speed of the prototype and its specific
speed. Assume turbine efficiencies to remain same.
5. A model of Kaplan turbine 1/10th of the actual size is tested under a
head of 5m when the actual head for the prototype is 8.5m. The
power developed by the prototype turbine is 8000KW when
running at 120 rpm at an overall efficiency of 85%. Determine:
(i)Speed, (ii)Discharge, (iii)Power developed, (iv)Specific speed of
the model.
6. Derive an expression for the Euler’s energy transfer equation.
7. Define: a)degree of reaction b)utilization factor.
8. Show that utilization factor(Ԑ) and degree of reaction for the axial
flow turbine are related by, Ԑ =(V12-V22)/( V12-RV22).
9. In an invert flow radial turbine, degree of reaction R and utilization
factor Ԑ, assuming radial velocity component is constant
throughout and there is no tangential component of absolute
velocity at the outlet, show that the inlet nozzle angle is given by
α1= cot-1(√(1-R/1- Ԑ). Ԑ).
10. An axial flow turbine has a degree of reaction ¼ and is
working with maximum utilization. Show that the ratio of the
blade speed to the absolute velocity of fluid at inlet is
U/V1=(2/3)cos α1 where α1 is nozzle angle and also given that
α1=30°, U=400m/s, draw the velocity triangle and find the blade
angles.
