INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions, illustrate where necessary.

Question 1
The revolution number of a water pump is 1470 rpm, the flow rate is Q = 0.05 𝑚3 /𝑠. The hydraulic
efficiency is 𝜂ℎ = 90.6%, the mechanical efficiency is 𝜂𝑚 = 98%, the disc friction coefficient is
𝑣𝑡 = 0.065, the volumetric efficiency is 𝜂𝑣 = 93%. The overall efficiency of the pump is
𝜂𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 82.6%. Make a complete analysis of the losses, and calculate leakage flow rate and the
theoretical head. If the impeller diameter is 500 mm and blade width of 50 mm at the outlet. What
is power input, assume a slip factor of 0.38 and blade angle of 10°.
Question 2
An axial flow fan has a tip diameter of 2 m, a hub diameter of 0.8 m, and rotates at 1450 revolutions
per minute. For the condition of zero inlet whirl estimate the velocity diagrams at the mean section,
if the inlet absolute velocity is 55m/s the air has a density of 1.2 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 and losses are ignored.
Find the inlet and outlet blade, and also estimate the fluid power, if Δp is 5 𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 .
Question 3
Steam is supplied from nozzle with velocity 400 m/s at an angle of 20° with direction of motion
of moving blades. The inlet blade angle is 35° with direction of the moving blade. If there is no
thrust on the blades. Determine:
a. The flow coefficient
b. The reaction of the steam turbine
c. The number of stages of the steam turbine
d. Outlet blade angle
e. The power developed by the turbine
Assume velocity coefficient of 0.86, and mass flow rate of steam is 14 kg/s
Question 4
The total pressure head in the spiral causing of a Francis turbine is 20 m and the pressure is
atmospheric at the exit from the rotor. The blades of the rotor constitute 6% of the circumference.
The outlet angle of the guide vanes forms angle of 20° with the tangent. The inlet angle of the
rotor blades are 60°. The outside diameter of the rotor is 475 mm and the inside diameter 320 mm.
The width of the rotor blades is 65 mm at the entrance and 100 mm at the exit. The losses in the
guide vanes plus the rotor are 1.5 m water. The mechanical efficiency is 90%. Calculate:
a. The outlet angle of the rotor, with no shock conditions at the inlet to the rotor and the
discharge from the rotor being radial,
b. The rotational speed and the hydraulic efficiency,
c. The output power,
