1) The outlet of diameter of a Francis runner is 1.4 m. The flow velocity at inlet is 9.5 m/s .The
absolute velocity at the exit is 7 m/s. The speed of operation is 430 rpm .The power developed
is 12.25 MW ,with a flow rate of 12 m3/s .Total head is 115 m .For shock less entry determine
the angle of the inlet guide vane .Also find the absolute velocity at entrance ,the runner blade
angle at inlet and the loss of head in the unit .Assume zero whirl at exit .Also find the specific
speed .

2 ) A Kaplan turbine working under a head of 20 m develops 11772 KW shaft power .Outer
diameter of runner is 3.5 m and hub diameter 1.75 m .Guide blade angle at extreame edge of
runner is 350 . Hydraulic and overall efficiency are 88% and 84 % respectively .I f velocity of
whirl is zero at outlet.

Determine a) runner vane angle at inlet and outlet

b) Speed of turbine

3) A Pelton wheel has designed for the following specification

Power (shaft) =9560KW

Head =350 m

Speed =750rpm

Overall efficiency =85%

Jet diameter =not to exceed 1/6th of the wheel diameter.

Determine the following:

I) The wheel diameter

Ii) Diameter of the jet and

Iii) The number of Jets required

Take CV =0.985, speed ratio = 0.45

4) A centrifugal pump having outlet diameter equal to 2 times the inner diameter and running
at 1200 rpm works again the total head of 32 m. The velocity of flow through the impeller is
constant and equal to 3 m/s .The vanes are set back at angle of 30 0 at the outlet .IF the outlet
diameter of the impeller is 600 mm and width of the outlet is 50 mm.

Determine:

i) Vane angle at inlet ii) work done per second by impeller iii) manometric efficiencies

5) The diameter and stroke length of a single acting reciprocating pump are 50 mm and 100
mm respectively .It takes the supply of water from a sump 4 m below the pump through a
pipe 6 m long and 300 mm in diameter . It delivers water to a tank 15 m above the pump
through a pipe 40 mm in diameter and 20 m long . If separation occurs 70 KN /m2 below the
atmospheric pressure, find the maximum speed at which pump may be operated without
separation .Assume that the piston has a simple harmonic motion .
