1. A Pelton wheel, with single jet, rotates at 500 rpm and it works under a head of 400 m. If the
ratio of the vane velocity to jet velocity is 0.46, determine the diameter of the Pelton wheel.
Assume coefficient of velocity as 0.97.

2. A two jet Pelton turbine is required to generate 6000 kW under a head of 350 m. The buckets
deflect the jet through an angle of 1600. The decrease in the relative velocity while passing over
the blade is 5%. Overall efficiency of the turbine is 85%. Determine the diameter of the jet and
the force exerted by jets on the buckets. Assume coefficient of velocity as0.97 and speed ratio as
0.46.

3. A Pelton wheel having wheel diameter of 1 m rotates at 500 rpm. Water is supplied at the rate
of 0.5 m3/s under a head of 400 m. If the buckets deflect the jet through an angle of 1650,
determine the power delivered to the runner and the hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. Neglect
the frictional losses in buckets.

4. A Francis turbine has an inlet diameter of 2 m and an outlet diameter of 1.2 m. the breadth of
the blades is constant at 0.2 m. The runner rotates at a speed of 250 rpm with a discharge of 8
m3/s. The vanes radial at inlet and discharge is radially outward at outlet. Calculate the angle of
guide vane at inlet and blade angle at the outlet.

5. At what angle the wicket gates of a Francis turbine be set to extract 8000 kW power from a
flow of 30 m3/s when running at a speed of 200 rpm. ? The diameter of the runner at inlet is 3 m
and the breadth of openings at inlet is 3 m and breadth of opening at outlet is 0.9 m. The flow
can be assumed to leave the runner radially, and the blade angle is obtuse.

6. A Kaplan turbine develops 15000 kW power at a head of 30 m. The diameter of the boss is
0.35 times the diameter of the runner. Assuming a speed ration of 2, a flow ratio of 0.65 and an
overall efficiency of 90%, calculate (a) diameter of the runner (b) rotational speed and © specific
speed.

7. A Francis turbine produces 6750 kW at 300 rpm under a head of 45 m with an overall
efficiency of 85%. What would be rpm, discharge and brake power of the same turbine under a
net head og 60 m under homologous conditions ?

8. A 1/5 model of a Kaplan turbine is designed to operate at a head of 25 m. The prototype

produces 18 MW of power under a head of 49 m, when operating at a speed of 250 rpm.
Determine the speed, discharge and power of the model. Assume overall efficiency of the model
and prototype is same at a value of 88%.

9. A centrifugal pump has an impeller of outer diameter 30 cm. The vane tips are radial at the
outlet. For a rotational speed of 1450 rpm, calculate the net head developed. Assume manometric
efficiency as 0.82.
10. A centrifugal pump delivers water against a net head of 10 m at a design speed of 1000 rpm.
The vanes are curved backwards and make an angle of 300 with the tangent at the outer periphery.
Impeller diameter is 30 cm and has a width of 5 cm at the outlet. Determine the discharge of the
pump if the manometric efficiency is 95%.

11. A centrifugal pump lifts water under a static lift of 40 m, of which 3 m is suction lift. The
suction and delivery pipes are both of 35 cm diameter. The frictional loss in suction pipe is 2 m
and in delivery pipe, it is 6 m. The impeller is 0.5 m in diameter and 3 cm wide at outlet.
Impeller runs at a speed of 1200 rpm. The exit blade angle is 200. If the manometric efficiency of
the pump is 85%, determine the pressures at the suction and delivery ends of the pump and the
discharge.

12. A centrifugal pump has a rotational speed of 1200 rpm, design discharge of 0.5 m3/s and a
head of 20 m. The shutoff head is 30 m. For what speed will the discharge be 0.60 m3/s ? What
will be corresponding head? For what speed will the shut off head be 22 m?

13. A single acting reciprocating pump has a 15 cm piston with a crank of radius 15 cm. The
delivery pipe is 10 cm diameter. At a speed of 60 rpm, 310 litre/min of water is lifted to a total
height of 15 m. Find the slip, coefficient of discharge and theoretical power in kW required to
drive the pump.
