Assignment-1

1) A water turbine is to be designed to produce 27MW when running at 93.7 rev/min under a
head of 16.5 m. A model turbine with an output of 37.5kW is to be tested under dynamically
similar conditions with a head of 4.9 m. Calculate the model speed and scale ratio. Assuming
a model efficiency of 88%, estimate the volume flow rate through the model. It is estimated
that the force on the thrust bearing of the full-size machine will be 7.0 GN. For what thrust
must the model bearing be designed?

2) A double jet Pelton wheel has a specific speed of 14 and is required to deliver 1000kW. The
turbine is supplied through pipeline from a reservoir whose level is 400m above the nozzles.
Allowing 5% for the friction loss in the pipe, calculate
(a) Speed in the rpm
(b) Diameter of jets
(c) Mean diameter of the bucket circle
Take Cv=0.98, speed ratio= 0.46, and overall efficiency =85%.

3) A jet of water with velocity of 30m/s impinges on a moving vane with a velocity of 12 m/s at
30 degree to the direction of motion. The vane angle at the outlet is 18 degree. Find
a) The blade angle at the inlet so that the water enters without shock
b) The work done on the vane per unit weight of water per sec entering the vane, and
c) The efficiency.

4) A Pelton wheel is installed at the foot of the dam whose reservoir level is 220 m. The head at
the base of the nozzle at full nozzle opening is 200 m. The turbine is to develop a power of
3.7 MW at a speed of 200 rpm. The ratio of the bucket velocity to the jet velocity is 0.46 and
the coefficient of velocity of jet for the nozzle is 0.98. If the angle at the outlet of the bucket is
160, determine
a) The wheel diameter
b) The wheel efficiency
c) The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine.

5) A Turbine is working under a net head of 90 m. Water at the rate of 2.3 m3/s flows through a
1:2 model turbine which develops 300 kW brake power under a net head of 15m at 600 rpm.
Calculate
a) The Specific speed of the model
b) Overall efficiency of the model
c) Overall efficiency of the prototype
d) Brake power of the prototype
