Renewing V-belts

Renewing V-belts

Note the following when renewing V-belts:

• Use original V-belts of FO type. V-belts of
FO type have better properties than standard
belts on the market.
• Always renew V-belts in pairs, even if only
one V-belt is broken. Use V-belts in pairs.
• Inspect the pulleys. Remove corrosion, dirt,
oil and grease.
• Renew pulleys with damaged tracts.
• Inspect the V-belts. A damaged V-belt has a
short service life. A V-belt with paint marks
will slip.
• Check the belt tension.

Checking belt tension

Checking belt tension

If the belt tension is too high the pulleys and

bearings are put under stress, which reduces the
service life of the V-belts. If the belt tension is
too low, the belt will slip during high engine
output. Slip leads to poor charging, incorrect
engine speed indication, incorrect input values
to the tachograph and to poor cooling.

Automatic belt tensioner

Automatic belt tensioner

There are two different types of belt tensioners.

The new type of belt tensioner can also be fitted
in vehicles equipped with the old belt tensioner.
The belt tensioner must not be adjusted, opened,
repaired or modified in any way. If the belt
tensioner does not provide sufficient tensioning
of the poly-V-belt, it must be renewed.
The poly-V-belt must be removed before the belt
tensioner retaining bolt is slackened. The index
pin (restricting the belt tensioner angular
movement) is not designed to withstand the
spring force and may thus break unless the belt
tensioner retaining bolt is tightened.

! WARNING!

If the index pin breaks, the belt tensioner

arm will move out. There is a risk of
personal injury since the spring force on
the tensioner is high.

Removing a poly-V-belt with the new belt tensioner

Removing a poly-V-belt with the new belt tensioner

The new type of belt tensioner has a lug, which

makes it possible to secure the tensioner so that
the belt drive is free of tension.

! WARNING!

Pinch risk when working with belt

circuit.

1 Fit the ratchet handle.

IMPORTANT! The belt tensioner should only

be moved in the direction which relieves the belt
drive from tension. Moving the belt tensioner in
the wrong direction can cause damage to the belt
tensioner. The direction may differ, depending
on engine type. The example shows the
direction for a 12 litre engine.

2 Relieve the tension from the poly-V-belt.

IMPORTANT! The bolt used to secure the belt

tensioner must be pushed in fully.
134 026

3 Pull the ratchet handle until the belt

tensioner can be secured with an M8 bolt in
the intended hole.
4 Make sure that the belt tensioner is secure
and there is no strain on the poly-V-belt.

5 Lift off the poly-V-belt.

Removing a poly-V-belt with the old belt tensioner

Removing a poly-V-belt with the old belt tensioner

! WARNING!

Pinch risk when working with belt

circuit.

Below is a general description for removing a

poly-V-belt with the old type of belt tensioner.
1 Fit the ratchet handle so that there is room
for the ratchet handle when the belt
tensioner returns to its stop.

IMPORTANT! The belt tensioner should only

be moved in the direction which relieves the belt
drive from tension. Moving the belt tensioner in
the wrong direction can cause damage to the belt
tensioner. The direction may differ, depending
on engine type.

2 Relieve the tension from the poly-V-belt.

3 Lift the belt off a pulley, for example, in the
water pump.
4 Slowly release the belt tensioner back to its
stop.
5 Remove belt.

Fitting a poly-V-belt with the new belt tensioner

Fitting a poly-V-belt with the new belt tensioner

Below is a general description for fitting the

poly-V-belt with the new belt tensioner. The
description is applicable to all engine types with
the new belt tensioner.
The direction for relieving the new belt
tensioner differs between different engine types.
The belt tensioner must never be moved in the
wrong direction.
1 Check that the rollers in the belt
transmission rotate freely, without jamming
or making a noise.
2 Fit the poly-V-belt on all pulleys before
removing the bolt from the belt tensioner.

IMPORTANT! Make sure the drive belt is

located correctly in all the belt pulley grooves
before making it taut.

IMPORTANT! The belt tensioner should only

be moved in the direction which relieves the bolt
from tension. Moving the belt tensioner in the
wrong direction can cause damage to the belt
tensioner.

3 Use the ratchet handle to relieve the tension

from the bolt used to secure the belt
tensioner. Keep hold of the ratchet handle
and pull out the bolt.
4 Carefully apply tension to the belt drive.

Note: Check that the poly-V-belt is correctly

routed on all pulleys and idler rollers.

Fitting a poly-V-belt with the old belt tensioner

! WARNING!

Pinch risk when working with belt

circuit.

Below is a general description for fitting a

poly-V-belt with the old type of belt
tensioner. The illustrations show a 12 litre
engine but the procedure is the same for all
engines with poly-V-belts.
1 Check that the rollers in the belt
transmission rotate freely, without
jamming or making a noise.
2 Fit a ratchet handle in the belt tensioner.
3 Fit the poly-V-belt. See picture.

4 Keep the poly-V-belt tensioned so that it

stays in place and release the belt tensioner.

121 542
5 Fit the poly-V-belt around the remaining
pulley.
6 Keep the poly-V-belt in position and release
the belt tensioner.

Note: Check that the poly-V-belt is correctly

routed on all pulleys and idler rollers.

Noise in the belt drive

Noise in the belt drive

Checking
Run the engine with full load on the belt drive,
i.e. with the fan, alternator and, if fitted, the AC
switched on. Run the engine at idling speed, full
speed and with rapid acceleration.
Proceed as follows in case of noise
1 Slacken the poly-V-belt.
2 Check the poly-V-belt for cracks and wear
according to the instructions in the section
Checking the poly-V-belt.
3 Check the belt drive rollers by turning them.
The rollers should turn easily without
jamming or noise.
4 Check the belt tensioner by slowly pressing
it from the belt until it stops. Then, slowly
bring the belt tensioner back to the initial
position. Repeat 2-3 times. Jamming or
jerking of the belt tensioner is not
permissible.
