Introduction

In computer vision, visual descriptors or image descriptors are

descriptions of the visual features of the contents in images, videos, or
algorithms or applications that produce such descriptions.
They describe elementary characteristics such as the shape, the color,
the texture or the motion, among others.
Goal of description of image information suitable to use for
classification, recognition and interpretation.
Decrease the amount of data with as little loss of information as
possible.

Representation Schemes

boundary or region-based?
1 External or Internal.
Reconstruction?
Stable under scaling, rotation, and translation?
Recognition by incomplete or noisy representation?

Ashish Tiwari Asst. Prof. CSE Dept. (Inst.) Lecture on IMAGE COMPRESSION AND RECOGNITION(Unit-5-3) 4 / 32
Representation and Description

Based on region boundaries (external characteristics).

1 Chain codes, polygonal approximation, signature, Fourier descriptors, ...
Based on regions (internal characteristics)
1 area, P2A, topology, moments, colourdistribution, ...
Descriptors.
1 Should be discriminative.
2 Should be stable under variations such as scaling, translation, image
plane rotation, out of plane rotation, noise, occlusion, illumination.

Simple scalar region descriptors

A large group of shape description techniques is represented by

heuristic approaches which yield acceptable results in description of
simple shapes.
Heuristic region descriptors:
1 area,
2 rectangularity,
3 elongatedness,
4 direction,
5 compactness,
6 etc.
These descriptors cannot be used for region reconstruction and do not
work for more complex shapes.
