Chronicling how men meet other men
for sex, filmmaker Oliver Mason dove into half a
century of the UK’s sexual history, looking at the
impact the internet had on our sexual culture.
Through intimate interviews recalling
first-hand accounts, he weaves together
a brief history of gay sex, from the caravan
clubs all the way through to the apps.
We caught up with him ahead of the short
film’s premiere to pick his brain about the impact
the world wide web has had on our sex lives.

Hey Oli! How did you go about finding your subjects;

people that were willing to openly discuss their sexual
escapades?
Well, I guess that was one of the problems. I specifically wanted
it to cover hooking up through the ages. It wasn’t going to be
about romance and partnerships. I’m in my early-mid thirties
and I have a lot of gay friends my age with a little bit of variation,
so my biggest concern was that I wanted to have a breadth of
ages for it to feel reflective of the UK. I started panicking about “In the

Where do you go on from there?
Whilst we move chronologically forwards, I’ve
carved out prevalent behaviours from each
era. Moving to the 80s you have cottaging and
cruising, back to back. I had this phenomenal
contributor who was very intelligent and clear in
expressing his feelings, saying that mostly when
he was cottaging as a teenager in the early
‘80s, for him cottaging wasn’t just a sexual
act, it was a form of rebellion. It was a way of
fighting against heteronormative society. What
he was doing was illegal because the age of
consent was 21, he was 17, plus it was a public
space. For him, it was a subversive punk act of
rebellion. I thought that was fucking awesome.
Then come the nineties!
Then we move on to the arrival of the internet,
which was ‘89, but computers weren’t really
in the home until the late ‘90s. There was a
very clear cut gay use of the internet with the
launch of Gaydar.com in ‘99. I was chatting to
my mum’s friend who mentioned there were
other ways they had of meeting men before
Gaydar, with ICQ and other messaging sites,
forums and chatrooms. By the ‘90s on forums,
you could be a little less coded, a little more
obvious in what you were looking for. What I
found really interesting with people who were
using all these digital spaces, a lot of the time it
was for community and connection, as well as
being for sex or relationships. Decriminalisation
happened back in ‘67 but it only became
somewhat socially acceptable in the 80s and
90s, but even then it could be quite isolating.

And after the Internet came the App.
Grindr launched back in 2009. Based on the
interviews (and personal experience) the fact that
you could have access any time anywhere was
very different. It wasn’t a case of only when you
were at home at your desktop, or at work as a lot
of people did, you could be on the tube, walking
down the street, going to the doctors, it was
always there. You didn’t have to go to a cruising
ground or a toilet. A point quite a few people
made was whilst it opened up the access to men
having sex with men, it also made it possible to
be even more secretive. In the past, you had to
physically be there to show you were interested,
whereas now you can be as anonymous as you
like up until that point of meeting.
Having looked back across the decades,
what do you think the future holds for
men meeting other men for sex?
Technology is ever changing. I’m sure there
will be crazy virtual ways for meeting but
not physically meeting men in the future.
I personally would always like a physical
experience, but who knows, suddenly porn
becomes more interactive, a lot more
interesting. My personal hope is that the gay
community and queer spaces do still exist. It’s
interesting seeing that other spaces are trying to
open, spaces not just for drinking and clubbing.

After the success of the first Recon cabaret
in August and comedy night in November,
Recon will be back at the Royal Vauxhall

Romeo
De La Cruz
Variety is an integral part of cabaret; without a
rich and diverse mix of acts and styles a scene
will become hackneyed. Thankfully, our scene
- across the UK - is alight with engrossing
performance and art right now. One of the
performers who is part of this exciting wave is
Romeo De La Cruz, who has been performing
primarily as a drag, boylesque and dance
artist for the last six years. This week, Jason
Reid gets to know more about Romeo...
Who is Romeo De La Cruz?
Romeo De La Cruz is a trans, non-binary, energetic, enigmatic humxn
whose scintillating performances mash-up their craft of dance, drag and
boylesque to produce the twisted concoction of their majestic fetish. A softie
by nature but hardened by society. If you’re lucky you might just experience
the comedic side of De La Cruz
Describe your performance style in three words.
Extempore, majestic and personal.
What’s your aesthetic?
My aesthetic is developed around my personal insecurities as an introverted
drag performer; Romeo is a danceaholic who finds their voice through
movement - incorporating sexual fetishism, comedy and political statements
inspired by their offstage life.
Three artists who inspire you?
Jada Love paved the way for me in the burlesque world, and whilst we were
dating I was somehow incorporated into her act and she never left my side
- literally, because I married her. Performing with her helped me MASSIVELY
in becoming the true me. Lolo Brow and Lilly SnatchDragon were the first
womxn drag queens I saw perform and shared a stage with - they have a
presence, humbleness and genuine soul that hasn’t changed. These two
beings taught me without knowing.
What’s the biggest challenge you face as a drag king in 2019?
My biggest challenge is myself: stepping out my box to attempt opportunities
I’ve always been hesitate to do - anxiety can do many things to a human.
What are you listening to?

The world would be a better place without?
All the ‘phobias & ‘isms. Like biphobia, homophobia, femmephobia,
transphobia, xenophobia, ageism, colourism, genderism, racism, sexism and
more. I know we’re all made of skin, blood, muscles and bones but we can
be too focused on the outside, people need to look a little deeper.
If you could only read one book, watch one movie and listen to
one album for the rest of your days; what would you choose?
Book - The Black Dancing Body: A Geography from Coon to Cool by Brenda
Dixon Gottschild.
Movie - The Color Purple.
Album - The Divine Feminine by Mac Miller.
What haven’t you done yet that you’d really like to do?
Perform aboard and have my own merchandise. One day... I hope. Can’t
say when but I’m putting it out there in the universe.
What do you like to see when you go to a cabaret show as a
punter?
Diverse cultures; variety of talent/arts; venues and events that don’t
tolerate ‘phobias/‘isms; gender neutral toilets; all different bodies and
abilities represented.
Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.
I’m a medical marijuana supporter. This came after years of research and
seeing the benefits - physically and mentally - through close ones. I can’t
ignore the visible evidence worldwide that shows more positive effects than
negative for human life.

The number of people using PrEP is growing! PrEP works – as we’re
seeing with the MASSIVE drops in HIV diagnoses over the last few
years, especially amongst gay men in London. With more IMPACT Trial
places round the corner, and the price of online PrEP falling, here’s
everything you need to know about using PrEP in this PrEP guide,
produced in partnership between QX and PrEPster.

Top tips on how to use PrEP

However you’re sourcing PrEP, it’s
essential to know for sure that you
don’t have HIV before starting PrEP.
‘4th generation’ HIV tests are best at
picking up any recent HIV infection
than older types of tests. These types
of tests are usually only available
in sexual health clinics: finger-
prick tests, including those you use
yourself, aren’t quite as good as
picking up recent HIV infection. If
your 4th generation test comes back
negative, it’s OK to start taking PrEP
straight away. But if you’ve taken
any HIV risks in the 4 weeks BEFORE
that test, it’s a good idea to take
another test four weeks later (in
case the first test didn’t pick up on a
recent HIV infection).

 Side effects and dealing with them
About 10-20% of people who start PrEP get some sort of
side effects. These are usually minor ones – feeling sick,
headaches or stomach upsets. For most people, these
side effects go away after a week or two. Changing when
you take PrEP can help with these initial side effects – such
as taking PrEP before going to bed, rather than in the
morning. A small number of people get side effects that
mean they don’t want to carry on with PrEP. We recommend
talking to a qualified health worker to get advice on how to
deal with side effects at this level.
Longer-term side effects
PrEP can cause kidney problems in a VERY small number of
people. This is more likely to happen in people who have
pre-existing kidney issues, and in people who are over 40.
Getting a kidney function test BEFORE starting PrEP, and
then at least every year whilst on PrEP can help work out if
there are any issues. Because most people don’t use PrEP
for life (see right) most PrEP users are unlikely to experience
any longer-term side effects.
PrEP – it doesn’t have to be for life
Lots of people using PrEP do so for relatively short blocks of
time. Some of us use PrEP if we’re not in a relationship, and
then stop if a new monogamous relationship starts. Some
people use “holiday PrEP” – using PrEP for a few weeks if
we’re going on holiday. And some people, once starting
PrEP, decide it’s not for them and go back to only using
other HIV prevention methods, such as condoms. Bottom
line: PrEP doesn’t have to be for life for everyone.
How to get hold of PrEP: Most sexual health
clinics in England will have new places in coming months
after the IMPACT Trial released new places. The Trial is
the only way to get free PrEP on the NHS in England. Visit

about the Trial. THT’s Mags Portman PrEP Access Fund
https://www.tht.org.uk/our-services/online-services/mags-
portman-prep-access-fund provides free PrEP for people
on very low incomes. Thousands of people are buying PrEP

bottle. It’s recommended to only buy PrEP from reliable and

Following The Man, our central character,
we see him in three distinct stages of his life,
maturing from student (Thomas Flynn), to young
professional (Daniel Abelson) to older age
(Anthony Gabriel). There is little to be made
distinctive about our central character apart
from his sexuality, which translates a message of
a universal queer experience. The featured life
experiences are familiar, from hapless run-ins
in a rural town, an escape to study in the city,
to the breaking down of relationships and lost
loves. The three generations bring a new slant
on the gay male experience, though an ill-fated
engagement to a woman (Jenna Fincken) is an

interesting plot point to throw into the mix. Our
protagonist is consistently striving towards the
married with kids model in a gay landscape of
anonymous hookups and open relationships.
There is a tension between the idea of a ‘normal’
life and that of a gay sex-positive progressive
life, which is a little uneasy, with Ratcliffe’s writing
airing a latent disgruntlement with the gay scene.
The malleable staging has the show
effectively manipulating the space to create
bedrooms to nightclubs, with sensitive uses of
prop providing just enough context to set the
scene. Squeezing thirty years into a hundred
minutes is ambitious, to say the least, but the
performance space is well utilised, with an
effective portrayal of time progression. The
lack of continuity between the generations of
the central character portrayal proved rather
strange, however, with very little affectation
being carried through. They featured more
like generations of Doctor Who. While not
being consistent and accents coming and
going, they were undeniably entertaining in
their interpretation of the character. Thomas
Flynn’s performance the youngest iteration of
the man is the most successful, with his fragility
and enthusiasm glowing through to create a
beguiling performance. His turn as the northern
crossdressing rent boy whom the older man
seeks the services of is also spectacular; both
rib-tickling and heart-warming. Praise is also
due to Fincken brief performance as The Man’s
girlfriend, being completely at ease in front of
an audience.
Despite its rough edges, Circa is an evening
of theatre that is effective in capturing the
concerns of a gay man living in the twenty-first
century, laying down the path through which
one becomes older. It also poses questions
of what’s in store for our sexual culture as we
become increasingly digitised in our sexual
habits. Flynn’s performance alone is reason
enough to book your tickets, walk through
those red-lacquered doors and shuffle into a
repurposed church bench.

There’s something obscenely lavish about
overnighting in a hotel in your home city, a
seemingly unnecessary extravagance when you
could just as easily catch an Uber ride back
to your own bed. But the home-city staycation
is a thoroughly enjoyable way to get a fresh
perspective on a town you think you know inside
out and also to enjoy a property you might
otherwise have missed out on. QX spent two

is double-glazed to a high spec, soundproofing it
from the busy area that surrounds the property –
creating a real sense of peace and tranquillity.

 The night was a sell-out and we were having
so much fun that I’d totally forgotten about
money, so when the owner of the club handed
me a huge wad of cash at the after-party,
and I saw that we’d made more money on
one night than I made in two weeks at my day
job, I decided it was time for a career change.
Within a couple of months I’d quit my day job
completely and took up drag full time.
At that point did you think drag would
be a long-term career?
You know what’s really weird; at that time
thinking of the future was a luxury because so
many people were dying. We really did live
in the present. I wasn’t thinking much further
than the next couple of gigs.
Over the years you’ve met and worked
with some amazing people. Who was
the most fun to be around?
I’ve met and worked with a lot of the legendary
queens: Lady Bunny, Sherry Vine, Joey Arias,
Dorian Corey from Paris is Burning, Jackie
Beat, Chi Chi La Rue and so many more. The
one that really sticks out: I was hosting a red
party in Columbus, Ohio - one of these circuit
parties with five thousand gay men - and Holly

Woodlawn was guest of honour, and we hung
out for the night. Afterwards, myself, James
(my partner) and a select few went to a private
party and found ourselves in a hot tub at 2am
listening intently to Holly recount magnificent

I’m very excited but also feeling introspective -

that happened to be biracial. If I knew then
what I know now I’d have played her as the
blonde-haired, blued-eyed version she is now.
What would you say is your proudest
accomplishment?
My YouTube channel. Which came before I
was on RuPaul’s Drag Race. As a result of that
channel, I became known around the world
- as well known as a lot of the girls who’d
been on Drag Race. I did two sold out shows
in Australia and was flown to international
gigs. Cher started following me on Twitter,
I worked with Kylie, Lady Gaga knew who I
was, and I landed a TV comedy pilot which I
won an award for. So I really am very proud
of the channel.
30 more years?
ABSOLUTELY! Looking forward to it. My mom
is 86 and my dad is 90 and they’re both going
strong. I have good genes.
