DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

APPLICATION OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

Statistics:
Exponential Growth- Population:
Consider, P(t) be the sample quantity that increases with
time t and the rate of change or incresase in population
can be given as:
dP
dt
=kP
dP
Now dt is the rate of change of Population with respect to
Time t, constant ‘k’ is always greater than 0 because
population increase exponentially
The above equation is in the form og 1st order differential
equation which can be solved as:
P(t) = A e ……… eq 1
kt

Where A can never be zero as population increases not

decreases.
At initial time t = 0
P = P1 Where P1is initial population.
Putting t = 0 in eq 1 we get
P1 = A e 0

P1 = A …………… eq 2
Putting eq 2 in eq 1 we get:
P(t) = P1e ……………… eq 3
kt

As P1is always positive as per assumption and since k is

also positive, P(t) is an exponential function as per eq 3
dP
Also dt is called Exponential Growth Model.
We can also see that equation 3 can only be solved with
the methods and techniques of differential equation.
SUMMARY:
We use diff. equations in mass-spring-damper system ,
also use to check the system stability . It is used to study
simple harmonic motion . we can study about exponential
growth and decay with the help of ordinary diff.
equations.
