Introduction

“Eco” Hotel or “Green” Hotels are environmentally-friendly properties whose

managers are willing to introduce programs that save water, save energy and decrease

concrete waste while saving money. Eco Hotels are participating in recycling programs, linen

changing programs, installing energy efficient lighting, and getting their message out to their

guests and how they are doing their part in protecting the planet.

Moreover, the guests are encouraged to continue doing good things for the

environment and they can add more value to their journey and vacation during their stay in

the hotel/resort.

Why hotel should be Green or Eco

As more and more hotels embrace going Green it is so important that they all get on

moving to the same direction. By reducing waste reduction, water and energy in an effort to

be environmentally friendly is remarkable. Hotels should take the necessary steps for

energy-saving cost-saving, water-saving and time-saving environmental practices wherever

possible. The bottom line is hotels use up an massive amount of energy, collect an massive

amount of waste, and use a tremendous amount or water don’t you think it is time to protect,

recycle, and reduce the impact on our planet.

not adversely affect the resort's operational activities, viability and environmental and social

impacts.

Hotel Housekeeping ‘s operation

Housekeeping and laundry are areas where a large amount of water and energy are used:

energy to heat the water, run the machines, dry and iron the clothes. They use sunlight to heat

and dry towels, reducing electricity consumption from using a dryer. There are guidelines for all

hosts to follow to help better the environment.

 Switch off all equipment when leaving offices (air condition, computer screen, etc.).

 Turn off air conditioning and lights during lunch.

 Replace efficient light bulbs under coconut trees around resort by using 20 watt light bulb

instead of 120 watt. Old 60 watt bed side lamps were replaced by 40 watt.

 Using recycled paper, use of envelopes is not encouraged

 Increase recycling - we can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling

just half of household waste.

 Closing the walk-in freezer door properly in main kitchen. Walk into the freezer room less

to take food out where possible.

 Adjust thermostat - adjusting the thermostat down 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees

in summer, can save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple

adjustment.

 In guest's room, if the door is not closed properly after 5 minute the air conditioner will be

turned off automatically by an energy efficiency thermostat.

 Reduce the use of air-conditioning at staff canteen and library.

 Always close and switch of lights and air conditioning when not in use.

[ECO HOTEL RESEARCH] 912 208

 Turn off electronic devices - simply turning off television, DVD player, stereo and

computer when not in use will save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

 It takes a great deal of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by using a low flow

showerhead (350 pounds of CO2 saved per year).

 Re-used cooking oil for the purpose of flambeau and fixing mud walls.

 Each room, villa, and outlet provides natural ventilation.

 Avoid leaving water taps running, especially hot-water taps. Heating water causes a

great deal of pollution because it requires much energy.

Comparisons of international and domestic hotel/resort

Comparisons between these two selected hotels from the general information shows;

international hotel and domestic hotel are focus on earth and environmental friendly. But

there is some difference between these two hotels is; domestic hotel has concerned more

about sustainable while international hotel has focused more on economic and societal.

Six senses Hua Hin is a fully sustainable hotel because they have promoted and

practiced their own ecosystem in the hotel based on locally and environmental. Six senses is

concern more in decreasing waste and saving energy while Longitude 131 focuses on

providing guests with incredible, memorable experiences.

Six senses has focused on adding value to guests during their stay in the hotel.

There are encouraged to be a part of responsible to the nature resource regarding to adding

value of a journey. Longitude does not concentrate much about sustainability because they

do not have the curtain sustain regulation but mainly adding incredible, memorable to their

guest.

Recommendations

Longitude 131 should establish the curtain policy of sustainable in order to be a fully

Green/Eco hotel. They should choose concern more in reducing waste and energy saving as

well. Because I think that this is also an important factor of being eco-friendly hotel.

Conserve the natural resource and building the slow life trend to the guests more not just

selling the attraction and activities. Eco/green hotel should has the characteristics of Eco

hotel as the information above. Concern and manage more in Housekeeping session

because it is the largest area of wasting water and energy.
