Conclusion:
The group ended up with a design of a chain-driven bamboo splitting machine

and knots grinder which runs at a speed of 29 rpm and 4000 rpm respectively. The

splitter portion can handle several types of bamboo shoots which have an (outside)

diameter ranging from 12 cm and 5.9 cm. From the data obtained in testing, the splitter

can process an average of 6.74 sec per feed. Meanwhile, the splits produced were

normally 105 shoots per hour given that the length of the bamboo is 5ft.

Recommendation:

This project has evolved greatly in terms of the design due to many

considerations hindering its supposed full potential. Some of the changes were based

on the financial capacity of this project. To secure the earlier ideas made as this project

progresses, the proponents listed topics which may be improved on this study. Future

developers of related projects may refer to the topics below.

1.) Mechanized or Automated Bamboo Drawer for a Bamboo Splitting Machine

This is a machine that will work on timing so that the operator will need not

to lift bamboo shoots from the ground in each splitting cycle promoting ergonomic

benefits.

2.) Improvement of the Rate of Knot Grinding

As of now, the splits produced are not in balance with the number of the

splits grinded. For the grinder to be more efficient, it can be developed to work on

more splits at once.

3.) Installation of a Clutch System on the Grinder and on the Splitter

With this innovation, both the grinder and the splitter may work separately

from each other if desired.

4.) Single Feed Splitter and Grinder

Considering that the second bullet on this section is achieved, a single

feed of a bamboo will be converted cut and knot-grinded splits directly.

Abstract:

For many years, Philippines has been a country of rich culture and traditions.

Most of them are define by the broad passion of our local craftsmen and one of the

most accustomed industry in the country is bamboo crafting. Through centuries,

Filipinos have learned to utilize its abundance in various ways. As the world demands a

continuous modernization, the bamboo industry must also be innovative in order to

sustain and preserve this heritage.

For this reason, this study aims to design a machine that can handle both the

splitting and the knot grinding process on bamboo shoots to save time and labor. The

machine is to be driven by a single motor connected to belts and chain drive to power

both the grinder and the feeder. The feeder slides on a linear motion pushing the

bamboo to the cutter, while the grinder moves on a rotational motion removing the knots

of the passing bamboo strips respectively. The splitter converts a bamboo shoots to

strip in about six to seven seconds producing 10 splits when maximum number of

blades is installed and the grinder removes knots on the other end while running at a

speed of 4000 rpm. With this technology, the proponents are looking forward on helping

the local bamboo craftsmen to achieve new optimum potential production and income.

Introduction:
Mechanization has been recognized as a major activity to upgrade working skills

and obtain precise outputs leading to quality products. The product produced by
mechanization can withstand quality control measures, may meet strict measures of

global competitiveness and may result in less working duration. Machinery from various

sources have become operational in recent years for the primary handling of bamboo by

bamboo processing unit. The trends of innovation in the machinery in treating bamboo

become recurrent due to the needs in mass production of bamboo materials. The main

requirement is for an optimum configuration of machinery at its full potential and

accuracy and the productivity in a cost and time effective manner to process bamboo

depending on its application.

Thus, this project study wants to alter the existing bamboo splitting machine in

changing the system from classic splitter to innovative machine. By this project, the

length of the work will be less than the usual working time of bamboo splitter and will

solve the high cost manpower and will improve its speed, accuracy and quality of the

bamboo strips. This innovative machine can also cater mass production of processing

bamboo in lesser working duration. Thus, the researchers will focus on making bamboo

strips used in creating nipa huts and small furniture.

Prototype Design:

. The splitter will be dependent on a chain-driven mechanism such that the

bamboo shoot will be pushed by a feeder using a chain and sprockets assembly to a

cutting blade. The blade set that shall split the bamboo can be disassembled and vary

depending on the desired number of splits. The blade set has a hole on each side for a

nut to enter.
Data and Results:

For Feeding mechanism:

The bamboos that were brought have an average length of 5ft., and outside

diameter ranging from 12 cm and 5.9 cm, and thickness ranging 0.5cm to 1.5cm. On

splitting the bamboo, the group had decided to install the maximum number of blades

which is 10.

To continue, the split specimens were also used on testing the grinder. Earlier,

there were 60 splits produced in total. The following experiment required 10 splits per

trial which means there will be 5 trials available for knot-grinding. Using the data

collected on the five trials, the group were able to get the average number of splits

which the grinder can process in an hour.
