1. Product specifications and considerations-
Cleaning: Machine-washed clothes must be as clean as those hand-washed for 5
minutes
 Gentleness: Must wear clothes at slower rate than hand-washing [hole/tear growth]
Capacity: Minimum 2KG of clothes/load – should be easy to re-size.
Water: Effective washing must occur in soft and hard water at temperatures from
20°C to 50°C
Water usage: Maximum 10L water / 1kg clothes
Active pedaling time for effective washing: Maximum 30 minutes for wash and 5
minutes for rinse cycles
Total operation time: Maximum 1 hours, including fetching water, filling, washing,
draining, and cleaning
Power: Maximum 75W (comfortable level of human-power output)
Cost: Maximum Rs.8000 (comparable to cost of other MP machine)
Lifetime of structure: 5 years, assuming daily use
Materials: local (wood, wieldable metals, oil drum, bicycle parts, etc.)
Dimensions: less than combined size of a bicycle and commercial washing machine
Weight: Maximum 30kg, or 45kg if it has wheels.

Sr. No Components  Function

1. Inner drum(perforated) Holding the clothes

2. Outer drum To contain the water

3. Pedal arrangement Source of power generation

4. Shaft For transmitting power and

rotation
5. Bearings To constrain relative motion
between mating parts. Smooth
rotation of the shafts
6. Drain cock Removal of the used water

7. Chain drive Power transmission

8. Pedal sprocket (t=48) Power and motion

Output sprocket (t=14) transmission

2. Selection of suitable mechanism-
 After a careful study of requirements, preparations of rough
sketches of different possible mechanisms for the model were
made. The possible mechanisms which satisfied the requirements
were
1) Quick return mechanism
2) Slider crank mechanism
3) Chain and sprocket mechanism
 The major drawbacks of the Quick return mechanism are
1) Non-uniform motion of the drum which would degrade the
quality of wash.
2) Bulky setup to implement.
3) Use of bulky setup would also increase the pedal effort
significantly.
 Therefore, Chain and sprocket mechanism is selected based on the
availability, efficiency and assembly.

6. Design Calculations
1.
   Gear ratio and Velocity ratio:
Gear ratio is the ratio of pcd/no. Of teeth on driven to drive gear.
Velocity ratio is the inverse of gear ratio. Gear ratio = No. of teeth
in driven/No. of teeth in drive
Gear ratio = Dia. of driven/Dia. of drive
Gear ratio = Torque at driven/Torque at drive
Gear ratio = Speed at drive/Speed at driven
So, for (speed) reduction drives where torque gets multiplied, gear
ratio is >1.
For overdrives, where the velocity or speed gets multiplied, gear
ratio is <1.
Therefore, Gear ratio between output sprocket and pedal sprocket=
 GR=
GR== 0.292& VR= =3.428
15 06/30/2020
Hence, the mechanism is speed multiplier.
2.   Drum speed during washing cycle:

VR = Output sprocket speed÷ Pedal sprocket speed
Assuming Pedal speed to be 40-80 rpm
Output sprocket speed = 3.428× Pedal sprocket speed
Therefore, N=Drum Speed= 3.428×40= 137.12 rpm
And, 3.428×80= 274.24rpm

3. Torque available at the drum during washing cycle:

It is seen that under optimal conditions, when pedaling at 60
rpm a healthy person produces 125 Watts of power.
Therefore,
P=
 Torque available at the drum during washing cycle==
 T =8.70 Nm

6. Conclusion
The main objective is to provide a product with an
alternative way to wash clothes when there is no
electricity. It has to be understood that in rural areas, it
is a very stressful and laborious task. So the product
which is a pedal driven machine, it satisfies the need of
rural people by giving them an alternative way of
washing clothes which is quick, cost-effective and eco-
friendly. The product designed has zero operating cost,
cost-effective, and it can be used with minimal effort.

7. Future scope

Drying process can be added in the system by increasing the rpm by using an
appropriate mechanism.
Wheels can be inserted on the bottom of the machine for easy movement of the
machine.
Rack and pinion mechanism can be used to create a tumbling action of the drum
for efficient washing cycle.
Considerable research has been carried out by different researchers on pedal
powered machine. Devices that can be operated by pedal power are table saw,
band saw, meat grinder, wood carver, water pump, thresher and winnowers, stone
polisher, lathe, pottery wheels. Appliances such as juicers, grain mill, butter churn,
washing machine, Blender, water lifter, battery charger, Drill Press, Hack saw,
pedal power juicer, power charger, Refrigerator, washing machine, battery
charger, can be run directly by pedal powered machine with great efficiency.
If fabricating it can be used on large scale as an commercial product and can be
used for laundry business.
