Problem-Based Learning Assignment 2

Topic A.
One of the bench techs from the hematology department is habitually late to work. A tech in the
chemistry department observes another hematology tech clocking in with both her ID and also
the late employee’s ID, even though the late employee is not yet at work. How will your group
deal with this situation? Briefly discuss how the Keirsey temperament of each group member
affected your responses.

Lab Director: Leslie Montoya Guardian

Lab Manager: Lena Park Guardian
Section Manager: Rebecca Newman Guardian
Bench Tech 1: Nathaniel Peterson Guardian
Bench Tech 2: Robbie Moss Guardian

Lab Director Response

That behavior is dishonest and unacceptable to our team. We must be certain that our entire
team is familiar with our employee behavior procedures and make
sure that everybody knows what our expectations are. We must involve HR to
make sure that we will fill all the documents for a corrective action and make sure
this will not be repeated. “Practical and down-to-earth, Guardians believe in following the rules
and cooperating with others.”(Kiersey.com)

Lab Manager Response

Lena, the laboratory manager, decided to publicize this issue because the incident can be
repeated by someone again. She discussed how to correct the problem system-wide to prevent
the issues that may occur in the future at the department meeting
with other managers. Also, she made an announcement to all staff what kind of
incident we had, and said, “We all should trust each other, but all the trust comes from one’s
own honesty. If anybody witnessed the problem that we need improvement in our system or

1
work environment, please bring that up anytime.” Guardians tend to have a sense of justice.
This Keirsey temperament has influenced my response to raise and resolve the problem
publicly without overlooking and going over inappropriate matters.

Section Manager Response

My character feels that this is wrong to punch another employee in to work because they are
late, especially since they are not even present. That is a form of stealing. (Guardian’s believe in
following the rules) To deal with this my character will voice concerns to the lab manager and
include the complains voiced from the other technicians; possibly disciplinary action since this is
not the first time this has happened. Guardians believe in justice, discipline, and teamwork.

Bench Tech 1 Response

As the Chemistry tech who observed the behavior of the Hematology tech, Bench Tech 1 felt
that it was necessary to approach the Hematology Section Manager to alert her to what he
observed. He explained that he was behind the tech at the time clock when the event occurred
and that he clearly saw what had happened. He further stated that while he observed that
tardiness was an ongoing issue for the tech in question, this was the first time he had seen
someone else clock in with their badge. Guardians tend to be dutiful, helpful, and carry a sense
of justice. They also have respect for authority, which is why my character chooses to approach
management about the issue. At the same time, Guardians prefer to be cautious and stick to the
facts, so my character does not embellish or speculate in the conversation, merely stating what
he observed of the situation.

Bench Tech 2 Response

Hello Rebecca, the section manager, “ I do not like telling on someone but I feel it is my
responsibility to let you know that I witnessed a tech clock another tech in this morning. I saw a
tech in the hematology department clock in two tech ID badges. The hematology tech she
clocked in was not here yet and is often running late.” My character chose to do this and say
this because I am a Guardian with integrity and courage attributes. I knew it was wrong and that
I should make someone aware.

Topic B.
The lab manager has become increasingly strict over the past three weeks or so. Employees
are starting to grumble at being reprimanded for taking a few extra minutes at lunch and break

2
time. Extra breaks used to be the norm when the lab was slow, but now only one 15-minute
break every 4 hours is allowed. How will your group deal with this situation? Briefly discuss how
the Kiersey temperament of each group member affected your responses.

Lab Director: Leslie Montoya Guardian

Lab Manager: Nathaniel Peterson Guardian
Section Manager: Robbie Moss Guardian
Bench Tech 1: Lena Park Guardian
Bench Tech 2: Rebecca Newman Guardian

Lab Director Response

We need to standardize this situations, extra breaks are not allowed, because according with
the employees break policies, breaks are optional and only if work
volume allows. If work volume allows supervisor will let tech take breaks only 15
mins and once a day before or after lunch. Lunchtime is only 30 min. The Manager
need to make sure employees review the laboratory time lunch and break policies
and are aware of our expectations before start with corrective actions. I will notify
our HR partner about this conversation. Guardians believe in law and order, and sometimes
worry that respect for authority, even a fundamental sense of right and wrong, is being lost.
(Keirsey.com)

Lab Manager Response

My character, the Lab Manager, addressed the lab employees as a group and thanked them for
their feedback on the new restrictions. He sympathized that it was something to get used to and
conceded that it may feel unfair, but maintained that the restrictions were necessary. He
compelled his employees to see things from their co-workers’ perspective, suggesting that it’s a
good thing to get back to their department on time so that their co-workers aren’t working alone
for extended periods. The Guardian in my character respects hard work and upholding the rule
of law. Displaying a degree of humbleness, he recognized where his employees were coming
from but also pleaded with them to understand the benefits of the restrictions. Not wanting to be
a fickle leader and believing in its long-term benefits, he maintained his position on the
restrictions.

3
Section Manager Response
I will bring it to the lab mangers attention so they can decide how best to deal with the issue. I
think everyone should be reminded how sometimes we must be flexible in the laboratory and
step up when needed. It is a privilege to be able to take longer breaks sometimes and it could
be only the allowed 15 minute break all the time. My character chose to do this and say this
because I am a Guardian with positive self-esteem and vision attributes. I am willing to do what
is necessary to get the job done.

Bench Tech 1 Response

Tech 1, Lena, asked around other techs opinions first to ensure everyone had the same
grievance about the strict break time rule and started to discuss how they want to bring this
opinion to the lab manager. The guardian’s cautious nature affected my response to asking
other people’s opinions first before bringing the issue up to a higher level and making sure that
they were all on the same page.

Bench Tech 2 Response

My character would choose to follow the rules and maybe complain to the section manager
about how we used to be able to take extra breaks when it was slow. My character would ask
the section manager for more clarification and step up to work as a team. Guardians have
attributes to follow the rules, teamwork, and hard working.

Topic C.
Your lab will now be taking MLS and MLT students to train. One employee likes the idea very
much. One hates it. (Your group can choose which person/role is in favor of and which is
against the training program.) The lab director implemented this change with the hope of having
new graduates to fill anticipated vacancies as current employees retire. Role play a typical day
of student instruction. As part of your response, state how the Kiersey temperament of each
group member will affect the learning outcome of the students.

Lab Director: Leslie Montoya Guardian

Lab Manager: Rebecca Newman Guardian
Section Manager: Lena Park Guardian
Bench Tech 1 Robbie Moss Guardian

4
Bench Tech 2 Nathaniel Peterson Guardian

Lab Director Response

I want to communicate that we will accept MLT and MLS students, so we will see new faces in
the lab, they will rotate each bench. I expect you as a professional share knowledge and
technique with them. Guardian -Inspectors: They are patient with their work and with the
procedures within an institution, although not always with the unauthorized behavior of some
people in that institution. (Keirsey.com)

Lab Manager Response

My character, as lab manager, has instruction from the director, to implement this change with
the hope of having some new grads fill in for when "Jane Doe" retires next year. My character
understands concerns from the section manager and bench techs about being very busy while
training a new student, but as manager, my character needs all of you to step up and work as a
team! This will help our Lab team replenish the ones that are about to retire without having to
search and interview new grads from scratch. We can train them to our needs and liking. This
also aids for when vacations are requested and helps cut back on my budget for paying
employees to work overtime. As guardian, my character responded to this situation because of
these attributes: teamwork, stable leader, hard-working mentality, and very serious of duties and
responsibilities. These attributes will aid the learning outcome for any student.

Section Manager Response

Section manager, Lena, decided to bring this conflict between the techs who hates training and
the techs who like training up to the lab manager. She started a survey to determine how many
techs want to do training and how many hates, and how it
affects their job performance. She made the data chart based on the survey so the
Lab manager can see what the majority’s positions are.The guardians value the balance of the
teamwork. These tendencies influenced my response to act after hearing both opinions without
being narrow-minded. Guardian's provider temperament has affected the students' learning
outcome by providing her time and effort to survey others' opinions to help the department with
deciding how much training time they should invest in students and allocate students to which
department and the techs.

5
Bench Tech 1 Response
I am excited to have students. The more the better. I know it will be more work now. Just keep
thinking about those vacation days you wanted to take and could not because there was no one
to fill in for us. Also, all the overtime we have been putting in lately. It will be nice to know we
have techs available to help when they graduate. Being a Guardian with positive self-esteem,
insight and vision attributes, allows me to see the value of student training. The students will
learn a lot from someone who understands their value.

Bench Tech 2 Response

Bench Tech 2 complained that the lab was already busy and that training students would be a
burden on the techs. He questioned management about the lab’s ability to accommodate the
students. He later recanted to some extent, seeing that having students might actually be
helpful after a couple weeks of training, and that if they become new techs, it would alleviate
staffing issues and make it easier to schedule vacation. I saw my character’s loathing of the
onboarding students as not entirely authentic of his character. Guardians value hard work and
being a team player. He saw that meeting his responsibility as a trainer would ultimately prove
beneficial for everyone. If Bench Tech 2 can harness his work ethic and natural tendency to
work as a team, it would have a positive impact on the students’ learning. However, if he is
unwilling to come out of his shell and embrace change, as Guardians sometimes have difficulty
with, it would may negatively impact the student learning environment.
