CPP – 2 (Work, Energy and Power)

(Work Energy Theorem)
1. A block of mass m is moving with an initial velocity v 0 towards a stationary spring of stiffness k
attached to the wall as shown in figure.
(A) Find the maximum compression in the spring.
(B) Work done by the spring is?
2. Two blocks are connected by a string, as shown in figure. They are released from rest. Show
that after they have moved a distance L, their
common speed is given by v = 2(m2 − m1 ) gL / (m1 + m2 ) ,
in which  is the coefficient of kinetic friction between
the upper block and the surface. Assume that the pulley is
massless and frictionless.
3. A particle slides along a track with elevated ends and a flat central part as shown in figure. The
flat part has a length = 3m. The curved portions of the track are frictionless. For the flat part,
the coefficient of kinetic friction is k = 0.2. The particle
is released at point A which is at height h = 1.5 m
above the flat part of the track. Where does the particle
finally come to rest?
4. A small ball is placed at the top of a smooth hemispherical wedge of radius R. If the wedge is
accelerated with an acceleration a, find the velocity of the ball relative
to wedge as the function of . Assume that ball does not loose contact with
the wedge.
5. A particle of mass m is moving with speed u. It is stopped by a force F in distance x. If the
stopping force is 4 F then:
(A) Work done by stopping force in second case will be same as that in first case.
(B) Work done by stopping force in second case will be 2 times of that in first case.
(C) Work done by stopping force in second case will be 1/2 of that in first case.
(D) Work done by stopping force in second case will be 1/4 of that in first case.
6. A particle of mass m moving along a straight line experiences force F which varies with the
2F0 x 0
distance travelled as shown in the figure. If the velocity of the particle at x 0 is , then
m
velocity at 2x 0 is

7. Two blocks, of masses M and 2M, are connected to a light spring of spring constant K that has
one end fixed, as shown in figure. The horizontal surface and the pulley are frictionless. The
blocks are released from rest when the spring is non deformed. The string is light.
