BRIEF HISTORY

Company Profile:
Name: Harley Davidson
Founded: 1903
Incorporated: 1981
Founder:
William S. Harley
Arthur Davidson
Walter Davidson
William A. Davidson
Headquarters: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US.
Current CEO and Chairman: Jochen Zeits

 The first Harley-Davidson motorcycle was built in Milwaukee, Wisconsin--still the

location of the company's headquarters--in the early 1900s. The Davidson brothers--
William, Walter, and Arthur--along with William S. Harley, designed and developed the
bike and its three-horsepower engine in their family shed.
 The onset of World War I was actually a boon for Harley-Davidson. The motorcycle,
having done well in its utilization by police, was commissioned for use by the military.
The battlegrounds of the war also served as proving grounds for the motorcycles. After
resuming normal production, Harley-Davidson was able to begin incorporating
improvements into its new machines. The 1920s saw the company taking the lead in
innovative engineering with such features as the Teardrop gas tank and the front brake.
 Harley-Davidson again produced large numbers of motorcycles for the US Army
in World War II and resumed civilian production afterwards, producing a range of large
V-twin motorcycles that were successful both on racetracks and for private buyers.
 In 1965 the company was bought by the American Machine and Foundry Co. (AMF), a
leisure equipment manufacturer headed by Harley-Davidson fan Rodney C. Gott. The
arrangement proved, at least initially, to be a good one for Harley-Davidson, for it was
also in the 1960s that the company experienced its first competition since Indian went
out of business. The financial resources and stability that AMF was able to provide
helped the company battle Japanese motorcycle manufacturers.
 In 1982, the company won an anti-dumping judgment from the International Trade
Commission (ITC). This led then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan to impose additional
tariffs on imported heavyweight Japanese models, as allowed by the ITC.
 Harley Davidson revamped its New Rider's Course with the launch of Riding Academy
which for the first-time feature Harley-Davidson Motorcycles in 2013.

In 1901, William S. Harley made a blueprint drawing of an engine that could

fit into a bicycle at the age of 21. After two years, William S. Harley along
with his childhood friend Arthur Davidson began working to build a
motorcycle in 1903.
At the time, they used a small wooden shed in Milwaukee as their factory
with “Harley-Davidson Motor Company” scrawled on its door. This was the
first little step toward today’s motor-bike triumph. The same year, Arthur Davidson’s brother,
Walter Davidson, also showed interest and joined him in the efforts to build
motorbikes.

In the middle of 1920s, Triumph had become one of the leading

motorcycling (and car) manufacturers in the United Kingdom. Back then,
they had a plant that could produce more than 30,000 motorcycles per
year. They have expanded their business operation in the United States
and Asia.

Yamaha, repaired a broken reed organ in 1887. Shortly
thereafter, he successfully completed the first reed organ to be
built in Japan.

manufactures weaving machines. It supplied weaving equipments to
fabric manufacturers in Japan. Come 1920, Michio expanded his
company and established the Suzuki Loom Manufacturing
Company. Suzuki continued to manufacture weaving machines up until
the mid-1930s. In 1937, Suzuki ventured into a new strategy as the
company started producing materials for the World War II. The company
is said to have produced vehicle parts, gun assemblies, and armor.

grounded in hard-work and a reputation for sterling
excellence. These very same qualities defined the early
beginnings of Kawasaki starting with the partnership
between J.V. Del Rosario and Sakata Shokai, Ltd.

1968. In 1974, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI)
acquired a stake in the company, which later changed
its name to Kawasaki Motors (Phils.) Corporation. KHI again cemented its presence in
the Philippines when it took controlling stock of the company in 1996.

quality of the engines they produced but as all infamous product it will come with a fortune
therefore most buyers look for alternatives with affordable price.

 Increasing Preference of Electric Vehicles – Due to the current inflation of oil prices
for motor vehicles electric powered vehicles industry are now rising and possible to take
over the market for the reason of oil industry resources is now declining due to its limited
natural resources
Evidence(s):
ü In the Review of World Energy today stated that we only have 115 years supply
of coal production as of 2018
ü 50 years for Oil Supply as of 2018

ü The Rise up of Electric Powered Vehicles such as tesla, jaguar and such
companies
ü The global trend of converting of combustion vehicles to electric powered engines
by big companies as of October 1, 2018
 JMI Continues to Grow in Global Market – Japanese Motors are now a trend globally
such as brands of Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki which modern motor vehicle

(early 2019)

 Harley-Davidson Engines are not the Best – Due to modernization many motor
companies compete not by design, units produced and such but which motor cycle engine
is the best. Harley-Davidson is recognized due to its century plus long legacy reputation
in the motor cycle industry but the engine they produced is not the best

Evidence(s):
ü The Top 5 best motorcycle engines are produced by Honda, Yamaha, Triumph,
Ducati, and Crighton Rotary
ü Harleys also have a reputation for poor reliability, and for leaving a trail of engine
oil behind them

 The Aftermarket Parts are Limited – Harley-Davidson Motorcycles are recognized as

prestige and super rare. Due to its rarity, the parts of motorcycle of the brand is difficult
to find in the aftermarket moto supply. The people who wants authentic Harley-Davidson
parts must order to the company itself and pays fortune for the item itself and the
shipping fee if your country doesn’t have Authentic H-D motor parts Dealer
Evidence(s):
ü Harley Davidson bikes are known to require regular maintenance.
ü Expensive to purchase, maintain, and of course, to insure. There is nothing about
the Harley Davidson brand that screams “affordable” in any way. Harley
motorcycles have a very high theft rate, universally. Pair that with the ridiculously
expensive genuine Harley parts, and you have yourself a beautiful formula for
over-priced insurance
