In your own words and opinion, what would you want to change in the current Medical Technology Act

and explain why would you want this/these changes?

In my opinion, what I want to change in the current Medical Technology Act is the Section 19.
Rating in the Examination which states that in order to pass the examination, a candidate must obtain a
general average of at least seventy-five percent in the written test, with no rating below fifty percent in
any of the major subjects: Provided, That the candidate has not failed in at least sixty percent of the
subjects computed according to their relative weights. No further examinations, unless and until he shall
have completed 12 months refresher course in an accredited laboratory: Provided, That graduate of
paramedical profession other than Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Bachelor of Science in
Hygiene admitted to an examination under the provisions of this Act shall not be given further
examinations after the provisions of this Act shall be given further examinations after his failure to
qualify for the third time.

I want to change the required general average to 70% in the written test because it is not that
far from the required average for board examination which is 75%. I also want to give consideration to
every student who studied to pass and become a registered medical technologist. On the other hand,
when you get 70% in the board examination, you can become a medical laboratory technician so why
don’t we just adjust the general average to 70% so that they can become a medical technologist too and
adjust the general average for medical laboratory technician to 65%. I also want to change the fact that
the students is not allowed to take again the board examination if he/she failed the examination. Even
though the examinees failed for the third time, I believe that they have the right to take again the
examination without limit because we do not know what the student is going through when they are
taking the board examination.

We should know first what the student is going through, maybe some of them have a problem
when they are reviewing or some of the student can’t afford review center because they have a financial
problem. Maybe, they feel pressured by the people around them that’s why they are having an
emotional or mental problem. For me, we should consider the students effort because studying for
board examination and becoming a professional medical technologist is not that easy. Sometimes there
are people who can’t accept the fact that they failed the exam and it leaves a huge impact on their lives.
Therefore, I conclude that if we adjust the general average to 70%, it will be more easier to them to pass
the board exam. Although, I know that the general average should be higher because we are dealing
with humans in our work, I also want to consider each students effort that’s why when we adjust the
general average to 70%, I want to suggest to have a review every end of the month for the board passer
and even to those who already have their license.
