1. Enrolment Phase- the dean/college secretary conduct:
 Assessment
 The dean and the student jointly decides if the student will be able to handle the self-
learning pace and enroll to the course
2. Learning Phase
 Process Orientation conducted by the dean
 Self-paced Learning – knowledge acquisition of students in their homes
 Practical/Hands-on-skills acquisition with mentoring, coaching of students by instructor
at the school and online platform if possible
3. Post-learning Phase
 Conduct of Post-Learning Monitoring & Evaluation (PLME). This is a process
conducted by an instructor where the skills and competency of the student on computer
will be evaluated.

GUIDES FOR STUDENTS

There are four (4) main sessions in this section that will be briefly discussed during the
orientation.
1. Session 1- Orientation to the SLIM-P Learning Strategy for Computer Science
Course

2. Session 2- Self-Paced Modular Learning Session

3. Session 3- Practical/Hands-on Phase

4. Session 4- Process of Post-Learning Monitoring and Evaluation

ORIENTATION TO THE SELF-LEARNING INSTRUCTIONAL MODULE


AND PRACTICAL/HANDS-ON LEARNING APPROACH
TO COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE

This is a one-day session Orientation conducted by the College of Computer Science to the
students, presenting the learning processes and guide the students on how they will proceed to
the self-learning phase; the hands-on phase and post-learning monitoring and evaluation.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the session, the students should be able to:


 Explain the rationale for adapting the SLIM-P Learning for Computer Science Course

 Discuss the processes involved in the SLIM-P Learning

 Conduct a walk-thru of the different modules

 Clarify issues regarding the sessions

A. Understanding the Self-Learning Instructional Module and Practical/Hands-on


Learning for Computer Science Course

Course Description

The SLIM-P Learning has four (4) Components:

1. ORIENTATION PHASE one-day orientation to the course, the process flow from
Students Selection, the Study Guide and Reference Manual, and Student’s Workbook. A
run through on the modular instructions, exercises, assessment of learning and skills and
post-learning monitoring and evaluation.

2. SELF-PACED STUDY- done by the students, studying each of the ___modules one by
one, doing the assigned activities, exercises and taking the Modular exam before
proceeding to the next module.

3. PRACTICAL/HANDS-ON- after completing the ___modules, the student reports to the


school for their hands-on activities. The Instructor will administer the examination to the
student before going into the hands-on session. A passing rate of 85% is needed before
the participant can proceed to hands-on activity. After passing the examination, the
instructor will conduct the demonstration prior to the hands-on sessions.

4. POST-LEARNING MONITORING AND EVALUATION (PLME) - the student is


required to complete the learning modules and the hands-on activities. Within the
semester, the student is also monitored on their progress. Face to face discussion or
online meetings are done to address the problems and guide the student until the
requirements are completed. A Post-Learning Monitoring and Evaluation is also done to
assess the quality of education utilizing this flexible learning strategy.

B. Methodology

The Self-Learning Instructional Modules and Practical/Hands-on Learning Strategy for


Computer Science Course uses blended learning methodology. In the regular course, the
student acquisition (didactic sessions) happens in the classroom. In the SLIM-P Learning
Strategy, the knowledge acquisition happens in the student’s home thru a Modular Guided
Self-Paced Study, which may last for ___months; and the skills acquisition, or
Practical/Hands-on Phase at the school or through online sessions. The Instructor conducts
a one-day Orientation on the learning processes and activities; the Learning Manuals-Guide
for Students and the Workbook are lifted from the traditional classroom and skills training.

The course will be experiential and interactive. As the students go through the modules, they
are given the opportunity to talk to the instructor by phone, online or face to face meetings.
The development and assessment of the student’s skills throughout the course will focus
more on the student’s performance than on what he/she knows or have memorized.

C. Course Design

This Self-Learning Instructional Modules and Practical/Hands-on Learning to Computer


Science course uses mix modalities starting with a general knowledge assessment of the
students focused on the different modules of the course. This is followed by the preparation
of a student’s Personal Learning Plan - a Self-Paced Guided Study of the modules and
activities that involve application of the knowledge gained during the learning process.
After completing the study of each module, the students will do the activities that will test
their ability to perform or apply what they have just learned.

D. Knowledge Update

 During the orientation, students have been introduced to the key features of the course
and are briefly assessed. Based on the results of this assessment students will be able to
determine the topics you need to concentrate in preparing their Self-Paced Personal
Learning.

 The Self-Paced Personal Learning Plan (SPPLP) articulates how student will study
and use the course to achieve his/her learning objectives. The knowledge component of
the course includes self-paced study of the session modules, discussions and other
activities designed to help students develop a working understanding of the latest.

 Assess progress in knowledge-based learning through the activities and exercises students
have completed after each module during the self-pace study, activities/exercises and
other assignments.

 Students will take the final examination after they have finished studying the content
from all modules. A score of 85% or more indicates mastery of the learning materials.
For students scoring less than 85% on their first attempt, the instructor will review the
results with the students individually and provide guidance on using the reference manual
to learn the required information. Students scoring less than 85% can take the test again
at any time during the remainder of the course.
