ASSIGNMENT 1 (MIDTERM)

INSTRUCTION:
 This is a group work. Group work means “TEAMWORK”.
 Deadline: September 13, 2020. Send it thru email @
shella.talampas@ustp.edu.ph.
 Use a white bond paper in writing your solutions and answers.
 On top of the first page, write your group #, section, and group members.
 Show your solutions. NO SOLUTION, NO POINTS. Mark the answer with a BOX
drawn around it.
 It should be handwritten and use black pen.
 Write neatly and clearly.
 It is not necessary that only 1 member of your group will write the assignment for
final submission. It can be a consolidation of the solutions and answers of all the
members. Each member can picture or scan their solution and answer, and send
it online to the leader, and the leader will consolidate the group’s final solutions
and answers. Remember, this is TEAMWORK.
 Total points = 35 pts.

PROBLEM:

1. (1 pt each; Total=5 pts). What is the number of significant figures in each of the
following measurements?
a) 4867 km
b) 60,104 kg
c) 2900 g
d) 0.0000003 cm
e) 4.6 x 1019 atoms

2. (1 pt each; Total=3 pts)

a) Normally the human body can endure a temperature of 105°F for only short
periods of time without permanent damage to the brain and other vital
organs. What is this temperature in degrees Celsius?
b) Ethylene glycol is a liquid organic compound that is used as an antifreeze in
car radiators. It freezes at 211.5°C. Calculate its freezing temperature in
degrees Fahrenheit.
c) The ignition temperature of paper is 451°F. What is the temperature in
degrees Celsius?

3. (1 pt each; Total=3 pts). Carry out the following unit conversions.

a) 82 μg to mg
b) 6.73 × 10−4 mm to nm
c) 4.8 × 1018 mW to GW

4. (1 pt each; Total=3 pts). What are the empirical formulas of the following compounds?
a) C6H6
b) C9H20
c) P4O10

5. (2 pts). A metallic cylinder displaces 91.0 mL and has a mass of 245.7 g. What is the
density of the metal?

6. (2 pts). If the cost to fill a gasoline tank is $78.42 and gasoline costs $3.66/gal, how
many gallons does the tank hold?

7. (2 pts). A rock is placed on a balance and its mass is determined to be 22.410 g.

When the rock is then placed in a graduated cylinder that originally contains 11.34
mL of water the new volume is 17.82 mL. What should the density of the rock be
reported as?

8. (2 pts). What volume of a 1.00 M HCl solution is required to create 200 mL of a

0.250 M HCl solution?

9. (2 pts). An unknown hydrocarbon is subjected to elemental analysis. The results of this

test show that the compound is 83.24% carbon and 16.76% H. With a molar mass of 72
g/mole, what is the molecular formula of this compound?

10. (2 pts). How many molecules of strontium nitrate do a 118.63 g of SrCl2∙6H2O

contains?

11. (2 pts) A 6.55 × 10−3 M solution of Cd(NO3)2 can be made by dissolving grams of
the salt in sufficient water to make 500 mL of the solution.

12. (2 pts) If 225.6 grams of silver chloride are produced in a precipitation reaction, how
many moles of the salt have been formed?

13. (2 pts) A "neon" sign contains 2.4 × 102 mL of argon. Assuming that the gas is at
standard temperature and pressure, there is 1.00 moles of gas per 22.4 L of volume.
How many argon atoms are present in this sign?

14. (3 pts) An unknown hydrocarbon is subjected to elemental analysis. The results of this
test show that the compound is 83.24% carbon and 16.76% H. With a molar mass of 72
g/mole, what is the molecular formula of this compound?
