Overview

Introduction to Teradata Data Lab


A data lab is a separate dedicated space within a production data warehouse for agile
development of new analytic queries that can combine personal, ad hoc, or temporary data
with production data. Use a data lab to quickly analyze, reorganize, model, and prototype a
sample of real-time data, and experiment without any risk to production data.
A data lab benefits your organization in the following ways:
• Model data to see value before it is formally incorporated into the data warehouse
• Analyze data to see if it supports a prototype or proof of concept
• Access production space quickly and easily
• Manage workloads for data separately from production service level goals
• Explore data in production tables while maintaining data integrity
• Evaluate data on a short-term basis, such as for a merger or acquisition
• Reduce the database administrator workload by allowing users to manage data
independently

Introduction to Teradata Data Lab

Data Labs Workflow

Data labs are created and maintained by the Teradata Database Administrator (DBA) or by
designated owners depending on the needs of the organization. A best practice is to create a
team that defines the needs of the organization and establishes governance, practices, and
characteristics for the data labs.
The Data Labs portlet allows you to add lab groups. As part of the lab group creation,
defaults are defined for each data lab provisioned within the lab group. Additionally, access
and approval controls and lab instructions can be established. Lab instructions provide
guidance and best practices to help lab users. For example, provide information for loading
data into tables using Teradata Data Mover or load utilities such as FastLoad or MultiLoad.
Make a lab group private for security or other reasons so the labs in the lab group are only
available to a restricted set of Teradata Database users and roles. After the lab group is
created, the DBA has the ability to provision a data lab within the lab group and can assign
lab group owners who approve user and space requests. Some of those requests can be set to
be automatically approved. After a request to add a lab is approved, the lab can be
immediately used.
The DBA can load data from external sources or aggregate data from production tables. If the
user decides data is ready to go into production, they can email the owner or send a request.
A request sends a message to the lab owner. The lab owner or the DBA can move the tables
into production in accordance with corporate policies.

About Data Labs

A data lab is a separate dedicated space within a production data warehouse used for agile
development of new analytic queries that can combine personal, ad hoc, or temporary data
with production data. Data labs are governed by the DBA or by designated users, depending
on the needs of the organization.
The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator can use the Roles Manager portlet to assign portlet
permissions to the roles. Setting the Manage Lab Groups permission enables the role to
create, edit, and delete lab groups. Enabling the Dictionary data collector in the Monitored
Systems portlet ensures displayed data stays fresh in the Data Labs portlet and permissions
are synchronized with the Teradata Database.
There are several types of data lab users who use the portlet. Lab group owners, lab owners,
and lab users submit requests for actions they want to do, such as adding or deleting a lab,
increasing or decreasing the lab size, extending the lab expiration date, and so on.
The Settings view allows you to set thresholds that turn information red in the portlet view.
From the portlet frame, you can set criteria for receiving email notifications.

About Lab Groups

A lab group is used to allocate space for labs. Organize lab groups in ways that best suit your
organization, such as by function, department, country, or region. For example, you may

have four lab groups and eleven labs. You must have permission from the DBA to create,
edit, and delete lab groups. Labs can be set to expire.

Teradata Database Privileges


A lab group is a database that is created in the underlying parent database that is selected
when a lab group is created. A child database is created in the underlying Lab Group
database when an add lab request is approved.
The actions in the portlet affect the Teradata Database privileges or accessibility on the
underlying Lab databases as listed below.
Action in the Portlet Privileges or Accessibility on the Lab Database
When a lab expires READ and WRITE commands cannot be performed.
When a lab is reinstated READ and WRITE commands can be performed.
When a lab is deleted A DROP command is performed.
When a Teradata Database user or Users can only issue SELECT statements, but not other DML
role is made read-only statements or DDL. This prevents users or roles from creating,
modifying, or dropping Teradata Database tables in a lab.

Data Lab Users

DBAs
The DBA, typically your Teradata Database Administrator, ensures the integrity and
health of the production system. They also want to share the workload where it

makes sense. The portlet provides integration aspects into Teradata workload
management strategies, in particular Teradata Active System Management (TASM),
allowing the data lab environment to be managed using wildcard classifications.
After workload management is set up and a portion of database space is allocated,
data labs management can be given to one or more data lab owners.
Typically, your DBA architects the lab group structure, creates lab groups, assigns
lab group owners to manage approvals, manages space, configures workload
management, and can approve requests.
Also, the DBA ensures the proper Teradata Database privileges are given and works
with the Teradata Viewpoint Administrator to ensure the Data Labs portlet
permissions are assigned to the Viewpoint role allowing users in that role to create,
edit, and delete lab groups.
Power Users
The power user, typically owns and manages data labs, is an IT representative for
their team where they manage the external repositories for data proofing. They act
as the liaison between the DBA and the business analyst and end users. With the
Data Lab framework and appropriate Viewpoint portlets, management
responsibilities are simplified and are more efficient with more productive results.
Typically, your power user can be either the lab group owner or the lab owner.
• As the lab group owner, they send and approve requests, can delegate approval
authority, and receive lab group email notifications.
• As the lab owner, they manage labs, can approve requests if given approval
authority, receive lab email notifications, and use labs to analyze data.
End Users
The end user, typically a business analyst, explores data and tests theories. They want
to easily implement the proofing of data and then migrate new data into production
information. Data labs provide proof that test results will be consistent when
implemented in production. The end user receives fresh data and does not have to
wait for periodic data loads from production.
Typically, the end user sends requests, views tables in a lab, and uses labs to analyze
data.

Connecting to a System
1 In the Connect to System dialog box, select a system from the list.
2 Type your Teradata Database user ID and password.
3 [Optional] Do any of the following:
• Enter an Account String
• Select an Authentication Mechanism from the list
• Select a Character Set from the list
4 Click Connect.

Disconnecting from a System


1 From the portlet frame, click next to the system name, and select Disconnect.

Changing Systems
1 From the portlet frame, click next to the system name, and select Change System.
2 Select a system from the list.
3 Enter your Teradata Database user ID and other login information.
4 Click Connect.

Setting Email Notifications


You can set criteria for receiving email notifications. The notifications you set are specific to
you as a requester, approver, lab owner, or lab group owner. Changes are applied to all your
instances of the Data Labs portlet.
The Data Labs portlet is dependent on the Teradata alert service to send email notifications.

Working with Lab Groups


A lab group is used by the lab group owner to allocate space for labs. A lab group in Teradata
Viewpoint is a database in the Teradata Database and data labs are children of the that
database.
The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator assigns portlet permissions to a role allowing that role
to create, edit, and delete lab groups. When a lab group is created, the available space
allocated to the lab group is defined, as well as the default lab size, default lab expiration,
when an expired lab is automatically deleted, and a lab prefix when new labs are added to the
lab group. A lab prefix precedes your lab name to help manage workloads and is optional. For
new labs, users can request any lab size or expiration date.
The following settings can be applied either when a lab group is created or after a lab group is
created:
• Control access to a lab group for security or other reasons so the labs in the lab group are
only available to a restricted set of Teradata Database users and roles.
• Control who approves requests. For example, a lab group owner can temporarily give the
lab owner control of approving requests while the lab group owner is on vacation.
• Provide lab instructions for a lab group that provide guidance and best practices to help
lab users. For example, provide information for loading data into tables using Teradata
Data Mover or load utilities such as FastLoad or MultiLoad. These instructions are
optional.
• Assign read-only access to prevent Teradata Database users and roles from creating or
modifying tables in the lab. Read-only users cannot send requests to remove a user,
increase or decrease lab size, delete, extend, or reinstate a lab, drop a table, or edit lab
details. Users or roles with read-only access can send requests to add a lab, add a user, or
send an Other request.

Access and Approval Controls for Lab Groups

Access Controls
Access controls determine who can access the labs for security or other reasons and whether
lab users can view lab group details and lab details. These controls are typically set when a lab
group is created, however, the controls can be added or changed later.
The access controls are described below.

Approval Controls
Approval controls determine who approves requests or if requests are automatically
approved. These controls are typically set when a lab group is created, however, the controls
can be changed later. Set approval controls in Step 6 Approvers of the Add Lab Group
wizard when a lab group is created or from the Approvers tab after a lab group is created.
When a lab group is created, you have the option to set request limits on automatic
approvals for increase lab size and lab extension requests.
The approval controls are described below.
Control Control Description
Automatic Requests that are less than or equal to the size or duration are automatically approved.
Lab Owner Requests that are less than or equal to the size or duration, and greater than Automatic, are
approved by either the lab owner or lab group owner.
Lab Group Owner Requests with a size or duration greater than the Automatic or Lab Owner thresholds are
approved by the lab group owner.

The types of requests that a lab group owner can delegate to the lab owner to approve are:
• Add or remove user
• Add or remove owner
• Delete lab
• Decrease lab size
• Drop table

The lab group owner can also delegate authority to the lab owner to approve requests to
increase lab size to a specified size and extend a lab by a specified time frame or specify no
expiration.

Adding a Lab Group


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
The Teradata Database user ID you use when you log in to the portlet must have the DROP
USER Teradata Database privilege to update or delete a lab group and the following
privileges to create a lab group:
• CREATE USER
• CREATE ROLE WITH GRANT OPTION
• GRANT EXECUTE ON DBC.LogonRule
A wizard at the top of the screen guides you through the steps to create a new lab group. You
can return to completed steps by clicking the numbered step.

After a lab group is created, most settings can be changed at a later time by the Viewpoint
role with Manage Lab Groups permission.
Thresholds can be set and approvers selected for each request type. By default, all requests are
sent to the lab group owner for approval. Approvals can be delegated to lab owners or set to
automatically approve.

2 In Lab Group (step 1), do the following to specify lab group details and the lab group
owner email notification:
a Type a lab group name up to 18 characters.

b [Optional] Type a lab group description up to 500 characters.

c Type or select a parent database from the list.

d Type the amount of space to allocate to the lab group.


If the space is too low, lab users will be unable to request to add more labs in the lab
group.
e [Optional] Select the Enable display of users and roles for the lab group and labs
check box to enable lab users to see the Users tab when viewing lab group details and
lab details.
f Type a percentage from 1% to 100%.

When the allocated space is within the specified percentage of the lab group size, the
lab group owner receives an email notification, depending on the email notification
settings.
g Click Next.
3 In Labs (step 2), specify the default lab settings, request limits, and lab owner email
notifications, and click Next.
The default lab settings appear when labs are created, but users can submit a request to
overwrite the settings for their specific labs. Default lab settings can be changed by the
Viewpoint role with Manage Lab Groups permission after the lab group is created
except where noted.
a Type a size for the default lab.
If the size is too low, users will be unable to load more data into the lab, requiring the
lab user to send frequent requests to increase the lab size.
b [Optional] Select the Expire lab after check box and either select the number of days
from the menu or type a number from 1 to 9999 and press Enter.
If the check box is not selected, no lab expiration is set.
c [Optional] For lab groups that have an expiration duration for its labs, select the

Request Limits
The lab group owner has the option to set the following request limits on automatic approvals
for requests to increase lab size and for lab extensions:
Maximum size
If a lab has exceeded its size threshold, automatic approvals no longer apply and the
lab group owner must approve requests to increase the lab size by the setting
specified (1 to 9999 MB, GB, or TB).
Limit the maximum cumulative life
If a lab has exceeded its life threshold by repeated extensions, automatic approvals no
longer apply and the lab group owner must approve requests to extend or reinstate a
lab by the number of days specified (1 to 9999).

Changing Allocated Space


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
After a lab group is created, you can change the allocated space for the lab group.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 From the Lab Group tab, change the amount of allocated space.
3 Click Save.
The updated allocated space appears in the Allocated column in the Lab Groups table.

Changing the Lab Group Description


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
After a lab group is created, you can change the lab group description.

Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
After a lab group is created, you can change who can see the users and roles assigned to a lab
group or data lab.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 From the Lab Group tab, do one of the following for the Enable display of users and
roles for the lab group and labs check box:
• Select to show the Users tab in the View Lab Group Details and the View Lab
Details dialog boxes.
• Clear to hide the Users tab in the View Lab Group Details and the View Lab Details
dialog boxes.
The General and Owners tabs in the View Lab Group Details and the View Lab Details
dialog boxes cannot be hidden.
3 Click Save.

Changing Default Lab Group Owner Email Notifications


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
After a lab group is created, you can change their default email notifications. The My
Notifications view allows you to enable or disable email notifications.
The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must complete the email configuration before email
notifications can be triggered.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 From the Lab Group tab, under Email Notification, enter a percentage from 1% to 99%
for Send email if available space is less than.
3 Click Save.
An email notification is triggered to the lab group owner if available space for the lab
group falls below the percentage.

Changing Lab Group Default Users


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
After a lab group is created, you can change the lab group default users. When the lab group
owner gives access to default Teradata Database users and roles, they can have either full or
read-only access to all labs in the lab group.

Make a lab group private for security or other reasons so the labs in the lab group are only
available to a restricted set of Teradata Database users and roles.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 Click the Private tab.
3 Do one of the following to set privacy limitations:
• Select the Restrict access to selected users and roles check box to restrict which
Teradata Database users and roles can access the lab group.
• Clear the Restrict access to selected users and roles check box to allow all Teradata
Database users and roles access to the lab group.
4 If you selected the check box, do the following to designate those who have access:
• Use to move one or more selected Teradata Database users and roles from the
Available boxes to the Selected boxes.
If there are more than 500 users, use the User list filter.
• [Optional] Select the Read-only check box if you want to give read-only access to
labs in this lab group.
Read-only users cannot send requests to remove a user, increase or decrease lab size,
delete, extend, or reinstate a lab, drop a table, or edit lab details.

5 Click Save.

Changing Lab Group Thresholds and Approvers


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
After a lab group is created, you can change the lab group thresholds and approval controls.
Set the thresholds and select approvers for each request type. If no settings are specified, all
approval and threshold requests for a lab are sent to the lab group owner by default.

By default, all requests are sent to the lab group owner for approval. Approvals can be
delegated to lab owners or set to automatically approve.

5 Click Save.

Deleting a Lab Group


Prerequisite:
• The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups permission
using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
• The Teradata Database user ID you use when you log in to the portlet must have the
DROP USER Teradata Database privilege.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Delete Lab Group.
A confirmation message appears.
2 Click Delete.
The lab group no longer appears in the Lab Groups table.

The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups permission
using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role to change the default settings. This role can
change the default settings for the lab size, lab expiration, lab instructions, lab request limits,
lab owner email notifications, or deleting expired labs.
You can submit a new request to add a lab using the Requests tab if at least one lab group
exists. You will receive an email notification that either approves or denies your request.
You can submit a request to be added to a lab if at least one lab exists. The Add User button
appears after you add the Data Labs portlet from the Add Content view and log in, allowing
you to submit a request. You will receive an email notification after your request has been
approved, depending on your email notification settings.

Changing the Default Lab Size


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 Click the Labs tab.
3 Under Default Lab Settings, change the Size for the default lab.
4 Click Save.
The updated size appears in the Size column in the Labs table.

Changing the Default Lab Expiration


Prerequisite: The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups
permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 Click the Labs tab.
3 Under Default Lab Settings, select the Expire lab after check box and either select the
number of days from the menu or type a number from 1 to 9999 and press Enter.
The updated expiration date appears in the Expires column in the Labs table.
4 [Optional] If you decide to expire the lab, you can select the Remove the "No
expiration" option from requests check box.
The No expiration option no longer appears for users to select when requesting a lab to
be added or extended.

You can specify a maximum lab size for all labs in a lab group. If a request for an increase in
lab size exceeds the specified maximum size, it must be approved by the lab group owner or
lab owner.
You can limit the maximum cumulative life for all labs in a lab group. If a request to extend a
lab exceeds the specified number of days, it must be approved by the lab group owner or lab
owner.
1 From the Lab Groups table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab group, and
select Edit.
2 Click the Labs tab.

About the Settings View


The Settings view allows you to set thresholds that turn information red in the portlet view.
Set thresholds that turn information red in the tables if:
• a lab group or data lab is running out of space
• approvals have not been responded to
• a lab is expiring
• table skew has been exceeded

About the Settings View

Managing Default Settings

In the Settings view, you can set or clear user-defined default settings for the portlet.
1 Click in the portlet frame and select Settings.
2 Set or clear the user-defined default settings for the portlet:

Save as Default Click to use the current user-defined settings as the default configuration each
time you add this portlet to a portal page.
Clear Defaults Click to clear all user-defined default settings created for this portlet.

3 Click Close.
4 Click OK.

Setting Display Thresholds

You can set thresholds to highlight important information in the portlet. These settings are
specific to your portlet instance so your settings will not affect other Data Lab portlet users.
1 Click in the portlet frame and select Settings.
2 Under Lab Group Size, enter the allocated space for the lab group from 1% to 100%.
This setting helps you determine if the lab group is running out of allocated space. If
space runs out, users will be unable to request to add more labs in the lab group.
When the allocated space is within the specified percentage of the lab group size, the
value appears red in the Lab Groups table in both the Allocated and % Allocated
columns.
3 Under Lab Size, enter the lab size from 1% to 100%.
This setting helps you determine if the lab is running out of space. If space runs out, users
will be unable to load more data into the lab.
When the used space is within the specified percentage of the total lab size, the value
appears red in the Labs table in both the Used and % Used columns.
4 Under Approvals, enter the number of days for approvals from 1 to 999 days.
When a response to an approval has not been received by the specified number of days,
the date in the Date column appears red for only approvers in the Approvals table in the
Approvals tab.
5 Under Expiration, enter the number of days before you want the lab to expire from 1 to
999 days.
When the lab expires by the specified number of days, the date appears red in the Labs
table in the Expires column.
6 Under Skew, enter the table skew from 1% to 100%.
When the table skew is exceeded by the specified percentage, the skew appears red in the
Tables table in the Skew column.

Exporting Data

Viewing Lab Details

1 From the Labs table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the lab, and select View Lab
Details.

within the lab (Used), lab expiration date, lab description, lab instructions, and lab
owner email notifications.
• Owners tab to view the Viewpoint users and roles who own this lab.

to this lab, including read-only users or roles. This tab is visible only if given
permission by the lab group owner.
3 Click OK.

Viewing Sample Rows

Viewing a sample of random rows returned by the Teradata Database helps you decide if a
specific table in a lab is ready to go into production or if the table should be dropped from
the lab if it is no longer needed.
Sample rows are visible only to lab users.
1 From the Tables table in the Monitoring tab, click next to the table, and select View
Sample Rows.
2 Review the sample of ten random rows and all columns in the Teradata Database table.
3 Click OK.

Exporting Data
You can export data to a .csv file for further analysis and formatting. The exported .csv file
contains all available data up to one million rows.
If filters are used, only filtered data is exported. If a portlet displays more than one million
rows of data, then use the filters to display the data you want before exporting it.
The format for the time, date, and some numeric values differs in the view and exported .csv
file.
1 Click in the table header and select Export.
2 Save the file using the browser options.

Tabs
The metrics that appear in the Monitoring, Approvals, and Requests tabs are listed below.
A 1024 byte kilobyte is used as the base for all memory-related and space-related metrics that
display, such as spool space, disk space, memory usage, and so forth. A 1000 byte kilobyte is
used as the base for all other metrics.

About Requests
Requests can be submitted for the following:
• Add, delete, or reinstate a lab
• Increase or decrease lab size
• Add or remove users from labs
• Add or remove owners from labs
• Extend lab expiration dates
• Drop tables
• Edit lab details
• Send other requests
Lab group owners can view or approve all requests for labs within their lab group. Lab
owners can view or approve requests for labs that they own. Lab users can view their own
requests, as well as requests submitted by other users in their lab. If you have permission to
approve a request you submit, no approval is necessary. If you are a lab owner, your requests
will be automatically approved if you have been granted approval authority.
Requests stay in the Requests tab until you delete them. You can delete any type of request
as long as it is your own request. You can see deleted requests from the request log.
From the Requests tab, you can use the Lab group and Lab menus or the state filter bar to
narrow your search for requests.
Lab users can only submit requests to add a lab or user, remove themselves as a user, increase
or decrease lab size, extend a lab, drop a table, edit lab details, or submit an Other request.
Teradata Database roles that have read-only access to a lab can only submit requests to add a
lab or a user, remove themselves as a user, or submit an Other request.

Requesting a Lab

Anyone can submit a request to add a lab. Any lab size or expiration date can be requested.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to add a data lab:

A lab prefix displays as read-only if a prefix was added when the lab group was created.
2 Enter a lab name up to 24 characters.
3 Enter a size up to 999 MB, GB, or TB, depending on the available allocated space for the
lab group, which is set by the lab group owner.
4 Do one of the following to select an expiration time frame for the lab:

Option Description
Set an expiration time frame Select the Expire lab after check box and either select the
on the lab number of days from the menu or type a number from 1 to
9999 and press Enter.
Set no expiration on the lab Clear the Expire lab after check box.

The expiration displayed is set by the lab group owner, but you can select any expiration
time frame.
5 [Optional] Enter a description for the lab up to 500 characters.
6 [Optional] Enter the lab instructions up to 500 characters.
Lab instructions provide guidance and best practices to help lab users. For example,
provide information for loading data into tables using Teradata Data Mover or load
utilities such as FastLoad or MultiLoad. The instructions can contain text and URLs and
can be updated at any time.
Default lab instructions may have been created by the lab group owner, but you can
overwrite the instructions for your specific lab.
7 [Optional] Select the number of days (7, 14, or 30) prior to this lab expiring that an
email notification is sent to all owners of this lab.
8 Enter a percentage (1% to 99%) of available space left at which an email notification is
sent to all owners of this lab.

9 Click Submit.
You will receive an email notification after your request has been approved, depending
on your email notification settings.
After your request has been approved, you can see the lab was added by looking for the lab
name in the Labs table in the Monitoring tab. If you do not see the lab, determine the status
of your request from the Status column in the Requests tab.

The Status column in the Requests tab displays the following:

Approved
The request was approved by the approver. Approved is an intermediate status that
typically occurs quickly before a request goes to a Successful or Failed status.
Successful
A request was approved and processed without failing.
Pending
The request has been sent and is waiting to be approved or denied.
Denied
The request was denied by the lab group owner or lab owner.
Failed
The request was approved, but the execution failed, such as when the system is out of
space.

Viewing Request Status

You can view the status of any request.


1 Click the Requests tab.
2 Click any of the following states in the state filter bar to display all requests or requests
with a specific status:
• All
• Pending
• Approved
• Denied
• Successful
• Failed
3 [Optional] Sort by Lab Group or Lab to display the requests for that lab group or lab.
4 [Optional] Click a request to view the details of the request.
The Request Details pane appears at the bottom.
5 [Optional] For Denied and Failed requests, click next to the status to review the
reason for the denial or failure.
If a reason for the denial was not provided by the lab group owner or lab owners who
have been granted approval authority to deny a request, the icon does not appear next
to the status.
6 [Optional] View a log of submitted requests.

Viewing the Request Log

You can view a log of submitted requests and export the data in the request log depending on
what type of user you are.

• Lab group owners can view a log and export the data for labs within their lab group.
• Lab owners can view a log and export the data for labs that they own.
• Lab users can view a log and export the data for their requests and requests by other
users in their lab.
A single identification number is assigned to one request, and the Action columns displays
which steps processed in the request. By sorting on the ID number and then reviewing the
information in the Action, Date, and Status columns, you can determine the date and time
the request, approval, and execution steps were processed and the status of each step.
1 Click the Requests tab.
2 [Optional] Click View Request Log to display a list of requests for all labs on your
Teradata Database to which you have access.
For a description of all the columns in the request log, see Metrics for Request Log.

3 [Optional] To export the data in the request log, do the following:

a Click the Table Actions menu, and select Export.

b Save the file using the browser options.

Requesting a Lab Size Decrease

Lab users can submit a request to decrease lab size.


Teradata Database users or roles that have read-only access to a lab cannot send requests to
decrease lab size.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to decrease lab size:

Requesting the Addition of a User

Lab users and Teradata Database users or roles that have read-only access to a lab can
submit a request to be added to a lab. If you are a lab user or read-only user, you can submit
a request for other users to be added.

If there are more than 500 users, use the User list filter.
• In the Available roles box, select one or more Teradata Database roles and click to
move them to the Selected roles box.
4 [Optional] Select the Read-only check box if you want to give read-only access to labs in
this lab group.
Read-only users cannot send requests to remove a user, increase or decrease lab size,
delete, extend, or reinstate a lab, drop a table, or edit lab details.
5 [Optional] Enter a comment up to 500 characters.
6 Click Submit.
You will receive an email notification after your request has been approved, depending on
your email notification settings.

After your request has been approved, you can see the Teradata Database users and roles you
added from the Request Details pane in the Requests tab, displayed in groups as Full
control and Read-only.

Requesting the Removal of a User

A lab owner or lab group owner can submit a request to remove any user from a lab. Lab
users and read-only users can submit a request to remove themselves from a lab, but not
other users.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to remove a user:

Requesting the Addition of an Owner

A lab owner or a lab group owner can submit a request to add an owner to a lab. Lab users
and read-only users cannot submit this type of request.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to add an owner:

After your request has been approved, the user (owner) you added appears in the Owners

Requesting the Removal of an Owner

A lab owner or a lab group owner can submit a request to remove an owner from a lab. Lab
users and read-only users cannot submit this type of request.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to remove an owner:

Requesting a Lab Deletion

You typically request a lab be deleted when the lab is no longer useful.
A lab owner or lab group owners can submit a request to delete a lab. Lab users and read-
only users cannot submit this type of request.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to delete a lab:

Requesting a Lab Extension

Lab users can submit a request to extend the lab expiration date prior to the lab expiration
date. If a lab has expired, you cannot submit a request to extend the lab expiration date;
however, you can submit a request to reinstate the lab.
Teradata Database users or roles that have read-only access to a lab cannot send requests to
extend a lab.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to extend the lab expiration date if the lab has
not expired:

Requesting a Change in Lab Details

A lab owner or a lab group owner can submit a request to change lab details, which includes
the lab description, lab instructions, and email notifications. Lab users and read-only users
cannot submit this type of request.
1 Do one of the following to submit a request to change lab details:

Requesting a Table Description Edit

The table description can be used to indicate why the table was created and the purpose of
the table.
Lab users can request an edit to the table description. The request is automatically approved
after it is submitted.
Teradata Database users or roles that have read-only access to a lab cannot send requests to
edit the table description.
1 From the Monitoring tab, click next to the table, and select Edit Table Description.
2 Add a new or edit the current description, up to 500 characters.

3 Click Submit.
You will receive an email notification after your request has been approved, depending on
your email notification settings.

The updated table description appears in the Description column in the Tables table in the
Monitoring tab.

Requesting Reinstatement of a Lab

After a lab expires, data in the Tables table in the Monitoring tab cannot be viewed; however,
all users can view lab details.
Lab group owners and lab owners can submit a request to reinstate the lab or delete the lab if
they do not want to reinstate it. Requests to reinstate a lab must be approved by the lab group
owner. If the lab group owner is the requester, it is automatically approved. After the request
is approved, the lab is available for use again. Lab data, lab owners, and users are returned to

After your request has been approved, you can see the same Teradata Database users and
roles that were in place prior to the lab expiration from the Request Details pane in the
Requests tab, displayed in groups as Full control and Read-only. The reinstated lab appears
in the Labs table in the Monitoring tab.

Sending Other Requests

The following are some examples of why you may want to send an other request:
• Re-create a lab in a different lab group
• Move a table into production
• Remove corrupt data from a lab
Lab users and Teradata Database users or roles that have read-only access to a lab can
submit other requests.
1 Do one of the following to submit other requests:

Requesting to Drop a Table

Lab users can submit a request to drop a table.


Teradata Database users or roles that have read-only access to a lab cannot send requests to
drop a table.
1 From the Monitoring tab, click next to the table, and select Drop Table.
The table name and location display.
2 [Optional] Enter a comment, up to 500 characters.
You can indicate why you want the table dropped.
3 Click Submit.
You will receive an email notification after your request has been approved, depending on
your email notification settings.

After your request has been approved, the Teradata Database table is dropped automatically
and no longer appears in the Tables table in the Monitoring tab.

Deleting a Request

You can delete your own request in any state and delete a Successful request. Deleting a
pending request cancels the request. If the request has already started processing, it cannot be
canceled (deleted).
1 [Optional] View the request status before you delete a request.
2 From the Requests tab, select a request to view the details of the request before deleting
it.
The Request Details pane appears at the bottom.
3 To delete one or more requests, do the following:

About Approvals

Resubmitting a Failed Request

A failed request is a request that did not process due to an error during submission,
completion, or delivery. Failed requests appear red in the Status column in the Requests tab
for all users.
1 From the Requests tab, click the failed request in the Requests table.

The Request Details appears at the bottom and displays next to the status.
2 Click to review the reason for the failure.
3 If you are unable to correct the issue yourself, contact your DBA.
4 After the issue is corrected, click Resubmit.
When lab users or read-only users resubmit a failed request, it is immediately processed
and does not need to be approved again.

About Approvals
When a request is made, it is added to a request queue for approval. As a lab group owner or
a lab owner, you can view these unapproved requests using the Approvals tab. If you are a
lab owner, your requests will be automatically approved if you have been granted approval
authority. After viewing the requests, they can be approved or denied.
From the Approvals tab, you can use the Lab group and Lab menus or the state filter bar to
narrow your search for approvals.
You can see the approval status of your requests from the Status column on the Requests
tab.
The Total lab group space is located in the upper right of the Approvals tab and appears
after you select a lab group from the menu. These totals allow the approver to consider all
pending space requests for the lab group in order to make informed decisions regarding
individual approvals. The requested amount is the sum of lab space in megabytes of pending
Add Lab and Increase Lab Size requests for the selected lab group. The available amount is
the sum of currently available lab space in megabytes for the selected lab group. Both of
these totals adjust as each request is approved. A message appears if the approver attempts to
approve more lab space than is available for that lab group.
The following is an example of a request to increase lab size. If a request exceeds the request
limits, the lab group owner sees a notification indicating the requested size exceeds the
maximum set size.

Viewing Requests for Approval

A lab group owner or lab owner can view requests that are waiting for approval.
1 Click the Approvals tab.
2 [Optional] Select All or a lab group name from the Lab group menu.
3 [Optional] Select All or a lab name from the Lab menu.
4 Do one of the following to display unapproved requests:
• Click the All filter button to display all unapproved requests.
• Click any button to display a filtered list of the unapproved requests by request type.
For example, click Extend to display the unapproved lab extension and reinstate lab
requests.

Approving Requests

2 Click the request to see the Request Details pane.

4 In the Deny Request dialog box, type a reason for the denial, up to 500 characters.
5 Click Submit.
6 Click the Requests tab to verify that the Status column displays Denied for the request.
