THE LEVEL OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS IN

ONLINE CLASS OF CATARMAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
“Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan,” is an immortalized line of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Youth now a days are the one which is mostly affected by the pandemic COVID-19, in terms of their

study and academic achievements. Students are most essential asset for any educational institute. The

social and economic development of the country is directly linked with students’ performance. The

students’ performance (academic achievement) plays an important role in producing the best quality

graduates who will become great leader and manpower for the country thus responsible for the country’s

economic and social development (Ali et al, 2009). Level of academic performance is an essential

indicator of student’s readiness in choosing the best course and career in the future. The Fourth Quarter

2020 Social Weather Survey on Learning Delivery Modalities (Part 4) states that 89% of families with

enrolled school-age members say the current ‘blended learning system’ (online class, modular and limited

face to face class) is more difficult than past face-to-face (F2F) learning (Social Weather Stations). As a

result of COVID-19 restrictions, conventional ways of schooling were not possible, and in order to

continue the educational process new digital resources, such as online learning platforms, were imposed.

Although virtual courses provided high-quality educational material, the efficiency in children's and

adolescents' academic performance in general is yet to be known. Since it affects a big role in academic

performance of students, how possible does Dr. Jose Rizal greatest line in this current situation.

Although it has already been incorporated into the Philippine education system, as attested

through the establishment of the University of the Philippines Open University in 1995 (Arimbuyutan et

al. 2007), the enforced adoption of e-learning put the country in an entirely different situation. School

administrators, teachers, and most especially students were caught unprepared for this new paradigm. The

whole situation resulted in a decrease in national student enrollment in 2020 by 3 million from 27.7

million in the previous year in both private and public schools. This is due to the lack of resources and

preparedness for the new system (Magsambol 2020). Alexander and McKenzie (1998) pointed out that
this lack of preparation for e-learning could result in learning failure among students as much as the

benefits revolve around them (Holmes and Gardner 2006).

The Catarman National High School (CNHS) is one of the government institutions in Northern

Samar. The CNHS senior high school programs was fully implemented in 2016 as it corresponds with the

K-12 curriculum. The CNHS is considered as the “School of Choice” or “Premier School” in the Division

and this served as one of the big factors that influenced students to select CNHS as their primary option

because of its better and satisfying educational services and programs. (De Guzman et. al) As a result,

many students specially in senior high school was greatly affected by the shift from normal face to face

classes to blended learning modalities (online class). Relatively, this study wants to identify the level of

academic performance of Grade 12 students in online class of Catarman National High School.

Currently, as a common observation of students, there has been a difficulty in the level of

academic performance of Grade 12 students participating in online class. This was evidenced by the low

performance result in academic Semestral Performance Assessment. This particular situation triggered the

researcher to pursuit in finding the level of academic performance of Grade 12 students in online class of

Catarman National High School. The researcher wants to determine if there is a drop on the level of

academic performance of students under the online class. Finally, the researchers wanted to compare if

there is significant relationship of online class in the academic performances of Grade 12 students.

Objectives

This study aimed to determine The Level of Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students in

Online Class of Catarman National High School.

Specifically, this aimed to:

1. Identify the profile of the correspondents in terms of:

1.1 Sex

1.2 Age
1.3 Family Income.

2. Determine if there is a significant relationship between the profile of the students and the level of

academic performance of Grade 12 students under online class.

3. Determine if there is a significant difference between the profile of the students and the level of

academic performance of Grade 12 students under online class of Catarman National High

School.

Significant of the Study

This study would be of great help to the following:

Students. This study would give students the idea about the factors that affects the level of

academic performance under the online classes of Grade 12 students in Catarman National High School

to serve as their basis in considering online class as learning modalities.

Teachers. This study would give the teachers the idea of how online classes affected the academic

performance of the students of Grade 12 in Catarman National High School. Hence, it will serve as a

guide to build much productive way of teaching where students can engage and participate to enhance

academic performance.

Parents. This study would give the parents the idea of how online classes affected the academic

performance of the students and what possible action can be supplemented to enhance it.

Principal. The head of the school must be aware of how the transitions from face-to-face classes

to blended learning instruction (online class) greatly affected the academic performance of students.

Furthermore, it will give ideas to the school head of some different approach that will enhance the

academic performance of students through online instructions.

Catarman National High School. This study would help the school in terms of improving the

quality of education through online classes that would likely reflect to the enhancement of student’s

academic performance.

DepEd. This study would be a big help in upgrading the educational system of the Philippines

through online classes. Thus, the DepEd would help the students to be more productive and participative

to improve their academic performance even in online class.

Future Researchers. In the future, this study may serve as a basis for future studies sharing almost

the same objectives and significance as this.

Scope and Limitation of the study

This study wanted to determine the level of academic performance of grade 12 students in online

class of Catarman National High School.

This study is focused on the level of academic performance of grade 12 students. Therefore, it did

not involve the level of academic performance of other grade level. The study only includes the factors

that affect academic performance of grade 12 students that undergo online classes.

The respondents of the study involve the Grade 12 students of Senior High School of Catarman

National High School, Catarman Northern Samar, using purposive and random selection. The total

number of respondents are the students enrolled in grade 12 that are under the online class modality.

In the emotional and psychological aspects, senior high grade 12 are more mature and has higher

mental ability or discern and make judgements well, thus they are more likely to be trusted than the other

grade levels.

This study was conducted in the school year 2021-2022. The researchers used survey

questionnaire as research instrument to suffice the needed data in the study. However, the validity and

reliability of the students’ answers vary.

Theoretical Framework

This study will be guided by the principle of The Theory and Practice of Online Learning of

Terry Anderson. The Theory and Practice of Online Learning, Terry Anderson (2011) examines whether

a common theory for online education can be developed. While recognizing that as a difficult, and

perhaps fruitless, task, he nonetheless examines possibilities and proposes his own theory which he

admits is not complete. The purpose of this article is to examine theoretical frameworks relevant to the

pedagogical aspects of online education. It starts with a consideration of learning theories and funnels

down to their specific application to online education. The article concludes with a proposal for an

integrated model for online education based on pedagogical purpose.
