CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The education landscape has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, largely

driven by advancements in technology. Golden Acres National High School, a prominent

educational institution, has also embraced this new learning approach, implementing hybrid

learning. While hybrid learning presents several benefits, it is crucial to assess its impact on

students' academic performance to ensure its effectiveness and suitability for the specific context

of Golden Acres National High School. This study aims to provide valuable insights into the

relationship between hybrid learning and academic performance, shedding light on the strengths

and limitations of this instructional approach.

Understanding how hybrid learning influences academic performance can inform

education administrators and teachers in making informed decisions regarding the implementation

of this approach. By identifying the factors that contribute to students' academic success in a hybrid

learning environment, the school can refine its teaching methods, adapt the curriculum, and

enhance support systems to optimize student learning outcomes. The findings of this study will

contribute to the existing body of knowledge on hybrid learning and its impact on academic

performance. Moreover, the results will provide actionable insights to the school administration

and teachers, enabling them to make evidence-based decisions regarding the future

implementation and improvement of hybrid learning at Golden Acres National High School.

7
Background of the study

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, students all around the world switched from distance

learning to the new normal of learning this time of year. As the `new normal" of education’

suggests that learning can be anywhere, the existence of brick-and-mortar schools is perceived.

Since there was a transition to fast and prompt learning in the "new normal education," various

experiences and acts of violence have occurred among young people.

One of the things that has been severely affected is the education of young people, who are

still struggling to figure out how to get through their education. In every aspect, students have

become fighters and challengers. These students prioritize convenience, flexibility, and the ability

to work while studying and are older than traditional college-age students (Harris and Martin,

2012; Levitz, 2016). These students also find asynchronous elements of a course more useful than

synchronous elements (Gillingham and Molinari, 2012). In contrast, students who choose to take

courses in person prioritize face-to-face instruction and connection with others and skew

considerably younger (Harris and Martin, 2012). In a contextual manner, students are able to

expand and explore the new normal of education.

This study focused on addressing whether educational systems can optimize students'

learning, feelings, and experiences. Many countries around the world are promoting education

through a new normal. Thus, the modes of new normal education are more practiced or supported.

This study aims to explore and expand how students are taught, the correlation between ways of

learning and how students evaluate their experiences, as well as the factors that influence these

evaluations.

8
Statement of the problem

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the new normal setup on the

academic performance of grade 10 students at Golden Acres National School. Specifically, it

sought to answer the following question:

1. How does the implementation of the New Normal setup, including online learning and

remote instruction, affect the academic performance of selected Grade 10 students in

Golden Acres National High School?

2. What are the factors within the New Normal setup that contribute to variations in

academic performance among Grade 10 students in Golden Acres National High

School?

3. What strategies can be implemented within the New Normal setup to enhance the

academic performance of Grade 10 students in Golden Acres National High School?

Hypothesis

Ha: Students' academic performance is affected by the new normal of education.

9
Significance of the study

This study, about the Effects of New normal of education of Grade 10 students will be

beneficial to the following:

To Students, this study can raise awareness about the high risk to have a level of learning and

how it affects their learning in the new normal format.

To Parents, it can help to give them information on how they can parent their child that is

experiencing positive or negative effects of new normal education and how it can exacerbate

problems that are inclined to the in education.

To Teachers, this study will guide them in knowing student's effects on new normal education on

academic performance and the positive and negative effects of new normal education.

School administrators, as this will give them insights on the student effects on new normal

education. By then, these curriculum makers can further investigate and suggest for the

improvement of the students that will help them control and reduce the risk of having new normal

education.

To Future Researchers, for this study will give them insights and ideas to improve and regain

knowledge about the variables that exist in this research, the level of new normal education of the

students. They can expand and explain this topic for verification and validate the results obtained

by the researchers.

10
Scope and limitation

The study will cover the limitation of the effects of new normal education. The primary subjects

of this research study will consist of the Grade 10 students enrolled in academic year 2022-2023

The respondents will be limited to 30 respondents of Grade 10 students of Golden Acres National

High School of the City of Las Piñas. moreover, participants will answer the prepared questions

to find out what the result will be in Effects of new normal education to Grade 10 students. It was

limited to the use of adapted survey instruments that focused on the students’ effect on new normal

education. Factors affecting these two variables was discussed in this study.

Theoretical framework

This research aims to investigate the effects of the new normal setup on the academic

performance of selected Grade 10 students at Golden Acres National High School that supports

the theory Technology Integration (Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koechier).

The Technology Integration Theory that was introduced by Punya Mishra and Matthew J.

Koehler of Michigan State University(2006). This theory suggests that the accommodation of

technology in education can positively impact students' academic performance. It posits online

platforms and virtual resources can enhance students' engagement, motivation, and learning

outcomes. This theory can examined to evaluate the use of technology in the new normal setup

affects the academic performance of Grade 10 students in Golden Acres National High School.

perspectives on the hybrid learning approach, using printed modules and social media as learning

materials to redesign science courses and improve their performances. Research into BL and online

learning attested to the formation of learning communities wherein knowledge construction and

social learning occur through interaction, collaboration, and personal accountability (Swan, 2002).

Distance education is broadly characterized as any form of learning experience where the learner

and the instructor are physically separated from each other (not only by place but also by time).

Arguably, such a dislocation is “the perfect context for free-flowing thought that lets us move

beyond the restricted confines of a familiar social order” (Hooks, 2003).Moreover, this type of

education is a way of providing learning opportunities to every learner, whatever their

circumstances might be. This means that distance education may extend access to education

through distribution and economies of scale (Guri-Rosenblit, 2005; Owusu-Agyeman and

Amoakohene, 2020).Such a form of education, however, need not be limited to online learning

(Baggaley, 2008). Some have suggested using cell phones and (SMS) texting technology to

facilitate learning (Flores, 2018). it “focuses on the design and delivery of programs, courses, and

learning interventions that address the learners’ unique needs in terms of pace, place, process, and

16
products of learning” (Parrocha, 2020).The approach combines television or on-air learning and

online learning. The rollout, however, was met with criticisms due to broadcasting problems and

poor connectivity (Bangkok Post, 2020). The implementation, however, proved to be challenging

given issues like uneven access to the internet, the disparity in teacher qualifications and education

quality, and the lack of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills (Azzahra,

2020).

METHODOLOGY AND RESEARCH DESIGN

Research design

This research aims a mixed method design that provides exploration and provide deeper

insight. The phenomenological research method was used in this study. This method “focuses on

the commonality of a lived experience within a particular group” (Creswell,2013). Typically,

interviews are conducted with a group of individuals who have first-hand knowledge of an

event.situation,or experience (moustakas,1994).This help the readers to understand more about

how the new normal set up effects the student’s academic performance. Readers can be guaranteed

to know how the new normal affect the academic performance of students. This study was carried

out to inform and raise awareness among readers about what or how the new normal set up effect

students

Population and sampling

The researchers used simple random sampling as their sampling technique. A probability

sampling that is frequency used in opinion surveys and in which he total number of people to be

questioned is usually determined in advance. The participants would be chosen among the Grade

10 Student at a maximum of 30 participants in Golden Acres National High School. The

respondents are the event direct informants who have witnessed this event.

18

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The main purpose of this study is to determine the Grade 10 student's effects

on academic performance. The following are the findings of the study.

The table 1 showed that 10 out of 30 answered "improved moderately" in the effects on their

academic performance in the new normal set-up. Students start gaining hope once they find they

improve moderately in the new normal.

The table 2 showed that 19 out of 30 are "active learners" in the new normal setup. Bettinger et al.

(2016) stated that several researchers have reported that learners' active participation in new

normal education courses is associated with high l levels of earning performance and higher

retention rates.

The table 3 showed that 16 out of 30 answered "Have significant teacher and student interaction"

in the new normal education setup with regards to effects on academic performance. Hai-Long

Sun et al. (2022) stated that teacher-student interaction promotes students’ learning engagement

by creating a good psychological atmosphere, which, in turn, influences learning effects.

27
Conclusion

The effects of Hybrid Learning on the academic performance of selected Grade 10 students

in Golden Acres National High School have been determined, revealing both positive and negative

outcomes. Overall, hybrid learning has presented several advantages, such as increased flexibility,

personalized learning experiences, and the combination of technology into the educational process.

Additionally, hybrid learning has fostered self-directed learning skills. The use of online

platforms, collaborative tools, and multimedia resources has expanded the students' learning

opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting. However, the transition to hybrid learning

has also posed challenges. Students may face difficulties in overcoming new learning

environments and technical issues that limit them to access technology or reliable internet

connectivity, and the lack of face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers has been identified

as potential barrier to learning.

Recommendation

The researchers also offered recommendations in this study:

This study suggests facilitating further studies on how to lessen stressors faced by

students in a new normal education.

It is important to facilitate new ways to get students to openly join face to face classes.

since only a few students have been participating actively in the new normal education.

Students must be fully aware of how they can cope with the difficulties caused by new normal

education.
