Critique Paper

Melanie Martinez is a talented songwriter who wrote “Mrs. Potato Head”. For this critique
paper I will use a feminist critical approach because the song is a good message for females
who are struggling with their lack of self-confidence and discrimination. The songwriter
Melanie Martinez stated that “When I wrote that song, I was going through a lot of personal
insecurities about how I looked, and it was a reminder that I’m beautiful the way that I am,
naturally, even when I don’t feel like it”.

The song tells about a couple who the husband wants a perfect and beautiful wife. The
husband wants the wife to have a plastic surgery although the wife insists. In the end the
wife has a horrible face and the husband's leaves his wife due to her horrendous face.

On the 1st line of the verse stated that “No one will love you if you're unattractive” from
what I know is that if she’s dissatisfied with her body it is easy now days to buy a beauty or
whitening pills. On the 4th line of the verse stated that “They stick pins in you like a
vegetable” this message tells about a process she believes that it will make her beautiful
enduring each pins stabbing through flesh as if it were a voodoo doll. On the 1st line of pre-
chorus stated that “Kids forever, kids forever Baby soft skin turns into leather “ it means that
she believes that she will have a flawless or perfect skin but as time goes we will all turn in to
a grainy or a leather like texture. On the 1st line of the chorus stated that “Oh, Mrs. Potato
Head, tell me, is it true that pain is beauty? Does a new face come with a warranty?” from
what I know is that Because of too much insecurities she is willing to cut everything in his
face and thus Mrs. Potato head. On the 3rd line of the second verse stated that “And a
hundred thousand dollars for some compliments” it tells about the cold reality of this world
is that People will spend too much just to be accepted or noticed. On the last line of the
song stated that “Even if her face don't stay together, Stay forever, stay forever” from what I
know is that in the end the husband leaves her because of her failed plastic surgery and the
husband finds a new woman.
The song tells about a wife who is pressured by her husband to be perfect or beautiful but in
the end the plastic surgery failed and the husband leaves her wife to find another woman. In my
opinion, I liked the song because it has a feeling the need to change how you look to fit a
certain standard and it is actually based on a cartoon character called Mrs. Potato Head in toy
story their similarities is that  you can pull apart the pieces and change her face, and how that
couples with plastic surgery.
