Instructions: Read the articles referenced and answer the items that follow.
1. Holt, J. (2014). Is there such a thing as the self? Prospect Magazine, 413-421.

2. Oyserman, D., Elmore, K.C., & Smith, G. C. (2012). Self, self-concept, and identity. In M.
R. Leary & J. P. Tangney (Eds.), Handbook of self and identity. (pp. 69-75). New York &
London: The Guildford Press. https://doi.org/10.1300/J082v10n03_13_ pgs. 69-75
1. List down three things that you significantly learned from the readings.
I have learned a thing or two from the articles and some of it, I still couldn’t quite
believe is real and is actually an existing and intriguing idea.
I have learned that the self is not our mere consciousness but it is the one that
allows us to be conscious and to have awareness in the first place. I have always
believed that there is a “me” being in me and it’s quite interesting to know that
there are studies that prove otherwise.
Another thing is that there is no single place in the brain that generates a self.
Lastly, it’s impossible to find self in the common-sense world of language and
others; it is a personal journey. The self is supposedly found through meditation
to build up self-awareness.
3. List down three questions that you want to ask about the readings.
Is self a memory structure such that the “me” aspect of self has existence
outside of particular contexts and social structures or is it a cognitive capacity
such that what constitutes the “me” aspect of self is created inside of and
embedded within moment-to-moment situations?
Is the self and identity in the singular or plural?
How do we distinguish between the mental content or the “me” and the aspects
of the mental capacity of thinking or the “I”?
