A Breakdown

PART 1

OCEAN FRONT, CASTLE ISLAND—N1GHT

Kevin and Laura get out of the rental car, which is parked at the side of the road, overlooking the water.
They climb over the fence and walk down the rocks.
LAURA You always come here, don’t you?
KEVIN Yeah. It’s my favorite spot. . . the airplanes ‘n’ all.
Kevin and Laura sit on the rocks.
LAURA I’m sorry about your father. It must be tough. . . I know how I’d feel if my father
died.
Kevin just looks out at the water.
LAURA Kevin. . . it’s normal to be angry.
KEVIN I’m not angry.
LAURA Look, it’s OK. I would be too.
Silence.
LAURA So, whaddya gonna do?
KEVIN Do?
LAURA With your life? Didn’t you want to study computer science. . . or something like
that?
KEVIN Yeah, but. . . now, I don’t know...
LAURA The airport’s really busy tonight.
KEVIN Yeah, it is.
LAURA Well, so far I really love my first semester at college. I mean, it’s so different from
high school. It’s like. . . the professors and students are really into it, and the
courses are great!
KEVIN How come you didn’t write to me?
LAURA I meant to.. . but with all my homework and everything.. . I’ve been in a real
work mode.
KEVIN You couldn’t write one lousy letter?
LAURA You’re right. I guess I’ve been all wrapped up in school, . . The required courses
are a pain, but the electives are great. . . like Gothic Lit. We’re reading Stephen
King, Anne Rice, Edgar Allan Poe.
KEVIN Yeah, but how long does it take to write a letter?
LAURA Well, you know I’m seeing other guys, right?
KEVIN Yeah.
Kevin stands and throws a rock into the water. Laura stands, too.
LAURA I’m just not ready to get serious with anyone.
KEVIN Sure.
LAURA I knew you’d understand. . . Listen, I better get back. . . before my parents find
out I’ve left
KEVIN Sure.
Kevin walks back to the car. Laura stands and looks out at the water for another minute, clearly worried
about Kevin.
CASEY APARTMENT—NIGHT
Brendan and Anne are about to leave.
BRENDAN Are you going to be OK?
REBECCA I’ll be fine. Go back to the hotel and get some sleep.
ANNE I hope Kevin will be home soon.
REBECCA Oh, he’ll be back soon. Thanks again for your thoughtful offer.
BRENDAN Where are my keys?
Brendan reaches into his pocket for the car keys. He can’t locate them.
BRENDAN My car keys. I thought they were in my pocket.
ANNE Honey, they’re on the hall table.
BRENDAN Ah.
He goes over and looks. They’re not there.
BRENDAN They. . . they’re not here.
ANNE Well, they must be. I saw you put them there.
Anne joins Brendan in looking for the car keys. So does Rebecca. They look on the floor and around the room.
ANNE Maybe they are in your pocket.
BRENDAN No, no, they’re definitely.. . they’re definitely not in my pockets.
He checks his pockets one more time.
ANNE Well, where can they be?
REBECCA Kevin!
She grabs her coat and heads out the door. The other two follow.

CASEY APARTMENT BUILDING—NIGHT

Brendan, Anne, and Rebecca come out the front door. They walk toward the spot where the car was parked 65
earlier and find it empty.
BRENDAN My car’s gone! Where’s my car?

LAURA’S DRIVEWAY—NIGHT
Kevin and Laura turn in to Laura’s driveway.
KEVIN When are you going back to school?
LAURA Tomorrow.
KEVIN Jeez, what am I supposed to say?. . . Good luck, I guess.
LAURA You’re a sweet guy, Kev. Good night.
They hug. She gets out of the car, and Kevin sits in sadness.

PART 2

CASEY APARTMENT—NIGHT
Brendan and Anne sit and listen to Rebecca’s phone calls.
REBECCA Thanks, John. Do me a favor. . . If you do hear from him, have him call me right
away, OK?. . . Sorry for calling so late. . . Bye.
Rebecca hangs up the phone.
BRENDAN He’s been gone for hours. Where would he go?
REBECCA I don’t know. I’ve called all of his friends.. . at least the ones I know. But I’ve
been gone for a while.. . He may have some new friends...
Anne is at the window.
ANNE Oh, here comes a car.. . No, no, it’s not him. Sorry.
Rebecca starts dialing another number.
REBECCA This is a long shot, but maybe my friend Sandy knows who he hangs out with.

SANDY’S APARTMENT—NIGHT
Jack is asleep, face down on the bed. We see an empty beer can on the night table. As the phone rings, he
awakens. Sandy gets up at the same time from where she is sleeping on the sofa.
JACK Why don’t you answer the damn phone?
Sandy walks down the hall and picks up the phone. Sandy’s right eye appears swollen.
SANDY Hello.
REBECCA Sandy, it’s Rebecca. How are you doing?
SANDY (speaking softly) I’m OK. . . What’s up?
REBECCA Listen, have you seen or heard from Kevin?
SANDY Kevin? No, why?
REBECCA Well, to make a long story short, he swiped my uncle’s car keys. We think he’s
driving around somewhere.
SANDY Oh God! Poor kid. . . No, I haven’t seen him.
Jack yells from the bedroom.
JACK Who is it?
SANDY It’s Rebecca. She doesn’t know where Kevin is.
REBECCA Do you know who he hangs around with these days?
SANDY No, we really haven’t talked much.
REBECCA If you hear anything, call me, OK?
SANDY Sure.
Jack appears in the doorway.
JACK Why the hell is she calling this time of night? I’m trying to get some sleep.
Jack heads to the refrigerator to get another beer.
SANDY I’ve gotta go. I’ll call you tomorrow, all right?
REBECCA Something wrong? What’s going on over there?
SANDY I really have to go.
Jack gets angry and strides over to Sandy.
JACK I told you get off the phone!
SANDY I’ll call you tomorrow.
He pulls the phone off the wall. Rebecca tries to talk to Sandy.
REBECCA Sandy? Sandy!
CASEY APARTMENT, KITCHEN—NIGHT
Rebecca, Brendan, and Anne sit at the kitchen table. The front door closes and Kevin steps into the kitchen.
Rebecca jumps to her feet.
REBECCA Kevin! Where the hell have you been? We’ve been worried sick. You took Uncle
Brendan’s car, didn’t you?
KEVIN (nods) Yeah...
Kevin takes the keys out of his pocket and tosses them onto the tables
REBECCA Oh, Kevin...
KEVIN I took your car.
Brendan comes slowly over to him.
BRENDAN Kevin, whatever the reason, that was not a clever thing to do.
Kevin nods, avoiding Brendan’s eyes.
ANNE But we’re glad you made it back safely.
BRENDAN If anything had happened, we would have been in big trouble. The insurance on
the car doesn’t cover you.
REBECCA I mean, Kevin, how could you do that? We had no idea where you were.
Kevin, though he had been feeling better, finds he can’t deal with all of this. He turns away. Rebecca grabs
him and turns him around.
REBECCA Kevin, talk to me. . . Why did you do that?
Kevin looks as if he is about to explain, but then doesn’t.
BRENDAN Were you drinking?
Kevin looks up and meets Brendan’s eyes.
KEVIN No.
REBECCA Look, you owe us an apology. . . especially Uncle Brendan and Aunt Anne.
ANNE It’s OK. We all did foolish things when we were kids...
REBECCA Yeah, well, he is not a kid anymore, OK? He’s nearly eighteen years old. . . and
he expects us to treat him like an adult.
KEVIN Shut up! Just leave me alone.
He walks back toward the front door and out.
REBECCA Kevin! Where do you think you’re going?
But he goes down the stairs. Rebecca yells after him.
REBECCA Kevin Casey! Stop this minute! Do you hear me?

CASEY APARTMENT, HALLWAY

Kevin heads down the stairs.
REBECCA Kevin!
CASEY APARTMENT

Rebecca looks after Kevin. She then walks back into the apartment to get her coat and reassure her aunt
and uncle.
REBECCA I’ll take care of this, OK? I’m gonna go get him.

PART 3

OUTSIDE THE CASEY APARTMENT

Kevin storms down the street. He hits a fence in anger and then stops. Rebecca runs outside.
REBECCA Kevin, you can’t run away from this. Come on.
Kevin turns and keeps going.
REBECCA Kevin, where do you think you’re going? (screaming) Kevin, stop acting like a
child!
BOSTON STREET—NIGHT
Kevin walks past a colorful, graffiti-covered wall.
Rebecca walks down a staircase toward the wall Kevin has just passed. She looks around nervously. She
doesn’t know where Kevin is.

PLAYGROUND—NIGHT
We see Kevin sitting underneath a jungle gym. Rebecca sees Kevin, and her mood softens.
Rebecca walks down the staircase toward Kevin. He is crying.
REBECCA (calling gently) Key...
She moves closer carefully and sits next to him.
REBECCA I know it hurts. Dad’s death. Mom’s death. Everything.
KEVIN Why? Why is everyone always bugging me? Why can’t they just leave me alone?
Why did Dad have to die?
Rebecca and Kevin sit in the darkness. She finally comes up with a way to reach her brother.
REBECCA When I was driving to California by myself, I felt pretty bad, pretty alone like you
do right now. And I wrote this song. Can I sing it to you?
KEVIN Do I have a choice?
REBECCA Urn—no.
Kevin looks disgusted. She begins to sing. it’s a terrible country-western song, full of self-pity and personal
problems. Rebecca sings it in a funny, country-western voice.

REBECCA Things are bad.

You’re feeling sad.
They’re not as bad as you think.
Oh, Lord, life stinks.
Oh, Lord, life stinks.
Say it with me, bro, life stinks.
Now that is gonna be a hit. Whaddya think?
KEVIN That is the stupidest song I’ve ever heard!
REBECCA It could use some work.
KEVIN Yeah, a little.
REBECCA So what are we gonna do?
KEVIN I don’t know.
REBECCA Maybe we could talk about it at least.
KEVIN Thanks, but I think I’ve done enough talking for one night.
REBECCA But we’ve got some decisions to make.
Kevin looks off. Rebecca is silent.
REBECCA (looks around) Hey, do you mind if we get out of this park? I’m cold.
KEVIN Sure.
He gets up.
REBECCA Oh, before we get back to the house, I should tell you Uncle Brendan came up
with an idea.
KEVIN Yeah? What is it?
REBECCA I’ll let him tell you. All I can say is it’ll give you some time to think.
Rebecca takes Kevin’s hand.
The two walk past the graffitied wall. Rebecca has her arm around Kevin.
