Job Hunting
PART 1
LIVING ROOM—NIGHT
Rebecca is on the phone, talking to Kevin back in Boston. She is in her bathrobe.
REBECCA Don’t ask, Kevin. My car broke down, and this guy helped me out. I had to sell
my car and take the bus the rest of the way. Anyway, how’s Dad?… Are you
sure?… No, don’t wake him… just tell him everything’s OK…The house?
It’s fine…It’ll be just fine.
FRONT HALL
Nancy returns. She just drove Edward back to the retirement home. She stops in the hallway and quietly
cries. She doesn’t know that Rebecca is near.
Rebecca hears Nancy crying and says goodbye to Kevin.
REBECCA Kevin, I have to go. I’ll talk to you and Dad real soon, OK? Me too. Bye.
She hangs up the phone and goes to Nancy, who is sitting by the staircase.
STAIRCASE
NANCY Goodnight.
Nancy goes upstairs by herself.
PART 2
Rebecca’s in her robe. She takes her toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, and towels and is about to head to the
bathroom. As she opens her door, Melaku passes by. She goes back into her room. After Melaku passes,
Rebecca starts to walk towards the bathroom again, but she stops.
Angela comes out of her bedroom and heads towards the bathroom. She is dressed for work. She goes into
the bathroom. Rebecca is waiting, and she watches Angela.
REBECCA Morning.
ANGELA Oh, good morning!
Angela puts on her lipstick and then leaves the bathroom.
ANGELA Well, it’s all yours. See ya later.
REBECCA Thanks.
She goes into the bathroom. She puts a “DO NOT DISTURB” sign on the door arid then closes it.
HALLWAY
Melaku and Angela meet near the staircase.
MELAKU Good morning, Angela. You look very sharp.
ANGELA Thank you.
MELAKU Well, I’m off to the library. I have a paper due in a few days. Have you seen
Miss Shaw?
ANGELA Uh… no, why?
MELAKU I have to give her my rent check.
ANGELA Oh… Is it the first of the month already?
MELAKU Yes. Will you tell her I left the check on the hall table?
ANGELA Yes.
MELAKU Thank you.
Angela disappears into the kitchen. Melaku walks to the front door. He leaves an envelope on the hall table.
It reads: “To Miss Shaw. September rent, from Melaku.” When Melaku opens the front door, he meets
Nancy. She’s dressed in walking clothes.
MELAKU Well, how was your walk?
NANCY Good. My friend Marsha’s a little slow, but I guess she’s getting old.. . like the
rest of us.
MELAKU I left my rent check on the hail table.
NANCY Oh, thank you.
Melaku leaves. Nancy picks up the rent check and heads for the kitchen. Nancy passes Angela on her way
out. Angela is rushing off to work.
ANGELA Good morning.
NANCY Don’t you look nice, all dressed up...
Angela looks down at her clothes, then at Nancy.
ANGELA Thanks, I got this blouse on sale. 50 percent off!
NANCY Good for you.
ANGELA Well, I’m off to school, and then off to my part-time job.
NANCY (calling after her) Oh, Angela, don’t forget, the rent’s due today.
ANGELA Oh, yes, I know that. I’ll give it to you tonight, OK? See ya!
NANCY Uh...
Before Nancy can respond, Angela is out the door.
STAIRCASE
Rebecca is dressed for school. She goes downstairs with her school forms in her hand.
KITCHEN
Nancy is preparing juice. Rebecca enters the kitchen.
REBECCA Good morning.
NANCY Good morning. How did you sleep after your long bus ride?
REBECCA Oh, I slept like a log. I was dead to the world.
NANCY Help yourself to some coffee. Use the big blue mug. Consider it yours.
REBECCA Thanks. (pouring herself some coffee) Mm, the coffee smells good.
NANCY The milk’s in the refrigerator. The sugar’s on the table.
REBECCA Oh, that’s OK. I take it black.
Rebecca sits down at the table.
NANCY You want a vitamin?
REBECCA No thanks.
NANCY So, what are your plans for today?
REBECCA I have a job interview at school .
NANCY Oh, that’s why you look so. . . business-like.
REBECCA Do you think it’s OK? I’m not quite sure what they expect .
NANCY It’s fine. What kind of job are you applying for?
REBECCA I don’t know. I’m supposed to work at the college to cover some of my tuition.
NANCY Oh. College is so expensive these days, I don’t know how anybody can afford it.
REBECCA Some people get scholarships, and there are student loans. . . and work-study
programs like mine.
NANCY Yes, but not everyone can get it...
REBECCA Oh, my gosh.. . look at the time. I don’t want to be late for my interview. Can
you tell me how to get to the college by bus?
NANCY Take a right. . . go two blocks. You’ll see the bus stop. Take the number 1 bus.
Ask the bus driver to tell you where to get off.
Rebecca finishes her coffee, and when she puts down the cup, she sees Melaku’s check.
REBECCA By the way, urn, when is the rent money due?
NANCY Actually, it’s due today. . . but you can give it to me in a few days. . . Good luck
with your interview.
REBECCA Thanks.
PART 3
Rebecca walks toward the school and goes inside. Rebecca walks down the hallway. Students are practicing
different kinds of music. Rebecca smiles. She knows that this kind of education is what she wants.
FINANCIAL AID OFFICE
The financial aid officer is sitting at her desk. Rebecca goes in and sits down.
REBECCA Hello, I’m Rebecca Casey .
MARIA Hi.I’m MarIa Gómez. How can I help you?
REBECCA I’m a new student. I’m here about my work-study arrangement.
Rebecca hands her the letter that she received from the college. Maria looks for Rebecca’s file on her
computer.
MARIA Oh, uh. . . didn’t you receive our latest letter?
REBECCA What letter?
MARIA We sent out a letter. . . dated August 10th. Because of budget cuts, we had to
cancel our work-study program this year. But don’t worry! You still have your
partial scholarship.
REBECCA What? Do you mean you don’t have a job for me?
MARIA I’m afraid not.
REBECCA I can’t believe this. How am I going to pay for college?
MARIA We tried to notify everyone. I’m really very sorry, but because of government
budget cuts, there’s just no money for these programs.
REBECCA But I was counting on that money to help pay for tuition, books, living expenses,
and rent.
MARIA I understand. We do have some alternatives. Sometimes there are jobs off-campus
that come in. Why don’t you check our bulletin board outside?
REBECCA Outside?
MARIA Uh-huh… in the hallway. And I’ll keep your résumé here on file...
REBECCA I don’t have a résumé.
MARIA You’ll need one. Here, use this one as a sample. And you can use our computer
lab to type it and print it out.
REBECCA Thanks.
MARIA You’re welcome.
BULLETIN BOARD
Rebecca looks at the bulletin board in the hallway. There are only a few notices. Most of them already have
“filled” written over them in ink.
