1.0 Overview of Environment Sustainability

The concern of avoiding degradation of natural resources and enable the use of renewable
sources in excess is called as environmental sustainability. The environmental sustainability
practices help in ensuring that the requirements of the present population are met without
endangering the availability of natural resources for future generations for their survival.

1.1 Social responsibility

It is essential for human beings to use natural resources without harming the natural
surroundings. For example, practices, like avoiding the use of plastics and encouraging the
use of paper or eco-friendly packaging materials, are considered as sustainable development
approaches.

  1.2 Environmental protection

Businesses are trailing towards the use of renewable sources instead of natural materials to
contribute to environmental conservation practices. It becomes mandatory for the companies
to follow the sanctioned policies developed by the government as natural resources are
depleting with the time.

1.3 Economic development

The requirement of natural resources is very high in the modern world of the living. Though,
people are inflexible on certifying that green conservation is not at the cost of their jobs and
the atmosphere (Epstein, 2018).

2.0 Influence of Environmental Sustainability in Organizational Behaviour

Organizational behaviour is highly influenced by the degradation of environmental
sustainability. This impact can be both terms positive and negative. In the context of
conserving natural resources and minimize the effect produced on it, organizations started
working on developing several eco-friendly practices. Along with sustainable development,
companies also seek to improvise their relationship with customers so that it would be easy to
make them flexible towards these new practices. Lean management is the major step taken
from many multinational businesses to reduce wastage and use of non-renewable in sites.

2.1 Positive impacts

Organizations are able to emphasize the significance of sustainable development involving
the employees for creating innovation in productivity. Implementing sustainability in action
is the key factor for organizations to work effectively. This also helps in encouraging
Environment Sustainable Business 4

employees to work with greater efficacy acknowledging the motivating dynamism behind
them. The trust of operating in an ethical manner is built in the workplace. Moreover, the
optimism adopted by the organization proves to be an enjoyable factor for the employees to
work with positivity and hence increases their performance efficiency and workplace
satisfaction (Galpin, Whitttington, & Bell, 2015).

2.2 Negative impacts

Organizations tend to face many challenges as applying sustainability in businesses is no easy
task. It is undoubtedly accepted that organizational activities cause pollutions problems in an
environment with the emission of harmful gases and substances in surroundings. For this
term, encouraging practices like recycling, virtual meetings and using solar energy for power
supply is can reduce environmental pollution possibilities.
For now, the business environment is greatly influenced by sustainable practices and
development. These can be further toughened the concepts of job design, goal setting
objectives and arranging flexible work timings.

3.0 Concepts affecting Apple Inc.’s environmental sustainability

3.1 Job Design

Job design plays a vital part in impacting the work performance of the employees. The well-
organized job design and optimistic working provide job satisfaction and motivation to
increase the productivity of the organization. The four key components of job design are
satisfaction, enrichment, enlargement, and rotation in the job profile. These four components
are further defined as under:
Job satisfaction is the term used to explain the level of motivation an individual experienced
in his organization in the context of stability, growth, and conformability. It is a scale that
measures workers’ contentedness with respect to their job profile.
Job enrichment is a factor of exploring the content to a large extent by involving planning and
evaluating responsibilities typically contented by the manager and to lift the motivation
factors within the organization.
Job rotation is the inability of shifting employees from one position to another or allocation
of multiple tasks to a single person in order to increase knowledge and increase the flexibility
of the employees to work (Oldham & Fried, 2016).
Job enlargement is the practice of amplifying the sequence of responsibilities and duties for
the purpose of elaborating job scope within the same level of services.

3.1.1 How will job design affect the organization’s transition to be or remain an
environmentally sustainable business?
Apple has the opportunity of rotating job responsibilities by adopting a well-organized job
design in its business. The work environment is frequently the first priority along with job
design schemes for the organization. The job satisfaction level in the organization within the
employees is on a great scale. Moreover, the lesser number of staff will allow the
organization to control its payable scale and can invest in the innovation process with a high
margin. The enrichment factor will allow the workers of effectively plan and assess new
processes of operations. Ultimately the job design will help the organization to achieve its
goals more effectively and in short, term working (Mollah, 2015).

3.2 Goal-setting
Goal setting involves the procedure of deciding the objectives for achieving organizational
goals which are considered as part of the mission and vision of the organization or any
general process. This step provides a direction to lead the problem to a successfully driven
solution.

3.2.1 How will goal setting affect the organization’s transition to be or remain an
environmentally sustainable business?
The concept of sustainable development is not agreeable for simple and universal acceptance
when it is a subject concerning business planning and efforts. To operate with the objective of
sustainability, the organization must have initiated the practice of making its employees
aware of the goals and approaches that are to be implemented for achieving them. By having
a systematic goal setting, the organization will be able to provide and associate a clear
structure of working. The organization’s transition is being affected by the goal-setting by
altering the mentality of its workers by inspiring them to corporate with the business strategy.
Moreover, goal setting for all decision-making processes will be helpful to achieve
sustainability and bringing evolution to superior transition (Cumming, Hou, & Lee, 2016).

3.3 Flexible work arrangement

A healthy work-life balance can be easily promoted by arranging a flexible work
environment at the workplace. Along with working flexible working hours and workdays,
this arrangement can also include the unusual and teleworking flexibilities. This type of
Environment Sustainable Business 6

working is actively benefitted for the students and female employees, willing to work in part-
time allowances.
Flexibility in working offers the employees to have freedom of scheduling the responsibilities
and hassles of their work (Blyton, Hassard, Hill, & Starkey, 2017)
3.3.1 How will flexible work arrangements affect the organization’s transition to be or
remain an environmentally sustainable business?
Considering the fact Apple is a giant base of business and has enormous requirements of
multiple employees, flexible arrangements can benefit the company in many terms. The
company will be pleased to provide such a facility to the workers on its terms and conditions
of wages to be paid. By adopting flexible work arrangements in business, the organization
will be able to grow in a sustainable environment. The consumption of electricity within the
organization automatically gets reduced if the working hours and days are less in number.
This factor is the direct advantage of this strategy. This will also enhance the job satisfaction
level in employees with strong trust and loyalty (Timms et al., 2015).
