Using Bing’s model of explaining how jokes work, explain six jokes from two of the

comedians we have watched so far that collectively illustrate the argument that subversive

humor can sometimes end up reinforcing the boundary and/or distinction between ‘women’ and

‘men.’ Remember, in order for analytical writing to be coherent, you must establish a connection

amongst ideas (in this case, the six jokes you select), and show your reader how the scholarly

explanations help you in turn explain the cultural texts.

The goal of this paper is to help you deepen your understanding of scholarly and cultural

texts by examining and analyzing them carefully in relation to each other. You are doing this by

applying ideas explained by a scholar to humorous routines by comedians, and/or explaining

comedy routines to illustrate or challenge a scholarly theory. You are writing to readers who, you

should assume, do not know the scholars’, or the comedians’ work. Write in clear, easy to

understand language and style!

Your answer should extend 1250 words, approximately five typed pages in standard

font and formatting (12-point Times New Roman, double-spaced lines, one-inch margins).

Include a descriptive, appropriate title.

You must provide correct citations within your paper in a citation style of your choice,

and a separate Works Cited page at the end. Include your full name, course number, and

assignment name on the first page; number all subsequent pages, and include your last name on

those.
