philosophical issues pertinent to theory development in nursing.
Upon successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
A. Highlight the background of the Theorists and the factors affecting the molding and development of
their theories;
B. Explain the significance of Nursing Conceptual Models of the theories in the Nursing Practice;
C. Determine the important contribution of the theories to the development of specialized nursing
knowledge;
D. Examine the nursing theories and how it applies in the clinical practice setting.

COURSE MODULE MODULE WEEK NO.1
Situation:
Mr. X, a 40-year-old university professor suffered multiple injuries resulting from a vehicular
accident.
He was on his way home when his car bumped into a post. He apparently lost control of the steering
wheel when he tried to evade a man who suddenly crossed the road. He was rushed to a hospital by
concerned citizens who witnessed the incident. His wife learned about the incident shortly after he
was brought to the emergency room through a call from one of the staff nurses who saw his ID and
driver’s license. She and some relatives were informed by the attending physician that Mr. X
suffered
minor bruises on different parts of his body and that his right leg and right arm is broken and
needed
to be put on cast. Because of the injuries he sustained, he needed to be confined in the hospital
until
such time that home management is applicable.
Mr. X was admitted to a private room. He and his wife met the staff nurse on duty for the first time.
The nurse introduced herself, gave information relevant to Mr. X’s confinement, health care, and
protocol of the hospital. She also made her assessment of Mr. X’s condition and told the couple that
they can call her in the nurse’s station in case they have any concern or needs her assistance.
Owing to the physical limitations of Mr. X, his wife, with the help of the staff nurse on duty assists
him in bathing, grooming, feeding, turning on bed, and other self-care activities. Mr. X verbalizes
that he is quite uncomfortable about this since he is used to doing all these by himself. The nurse
explains that his present physical condition calls for such assistance, but gradually will be able to do
these on his own again, and just needs some time to recuperate. Mr. X also verbalizes concern over
the work that he left unfinished in the university. He states he is not used to being stuck on the
bed,
doing nothing and that he misses the kids. His wife tells him, she understands what he is going
through, but that he needs all the rest that he could get. She says, the kids will visit him on
weekends.
She encourages him to pray so that he will recover soon, and that with God’s grace, they will be
able to overcome what they are going through. Mr. X agrees, then asked the nurse if she can lend
him a bible.
During Mr. X’s hospitalization, the nurse makes regular visits, assessing his condition, checking his
intravenous line, giving him medications, attending to his needs, and/or offering assistance to him
and his wife as needed. Every now and then, he would receive visits and messages of concern
from his kids, friends, colleagues, and relatives. His wife continues to support Mr. X while Mr. X
gradually recuperates.
Questions:
1. Identify the applicable theory.
