INTRODUCTION
 Natural Resources are most valuable asset for mankind
and need to be preserved for the future generation.
 Saving our environment is the most important
responsibility of our community.
 We can adopt some simple ways in preserving our
environment and natural resources.
 In history also many movements took place for the
very purpose.
 Those movements inspire us in this regard.
Historical Efforts
 Historically many movements initiated for preserving
environment and natural resources e.g:
 Chipko Aandolan
 Appiko Movement
 Silent Valley Movement
 Jungle Bachao Aandolan
 Narmada Bachao Aandolan
 Beej Bachao Aandolan
Chipko Movement
 The Chipko movement or Chipko Andolan,
was a forest conservation movement in India.
 It began in 1970s in Uttarakhand, then a part
of Uttar Pradesh and went on to become a
rallying point for many future environmental
movements all over the world.
 Chipko-type movements date back to 1730
when in village Prasanna Khamkar of
Rajasthan, 363 persons sacrificed their lives
to save Khejri trees.
 The Chipko movement became a benchmark
for socio-ecological movements in other
forest areas of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan
and Bihar.
Appiko movement
 In September 1983, Appiko
movement in Karnataka started
where tree felling in the Western
Ghats and Vindhyas was stopped.

 The Appiko Movement tried to save

the Western Ghats by spreading its
roots all over southern India.

 The Appiko Movement is

struggling to save the remaining
tropical forests in the Western
Ghats
Save Silent Valley Movement
 It started in year 1978 in Silent
Valley, an evergreen tropical
forest in the Palakkad district
of Kerala, India.
 The Kerala Sastra Sahitya
Parishad (KSSP) an NGO, and
the poet-activist
Sughathakumari played an
important role in the Silent
Valley protests.
 In order to protect the Silent
Valley, the moist evergreen
forest from being destroyed by
a hydroelectric project.
Jungle Bachao Aandolan
 Started in year: 1982 in Singhbhum district of
Bihar

 The tribals of Singhbhum took active part in it.

 It was against governments decision to replace

the natural sal forest with Teak.
Narmada Bachao Aandolan (NBA)
 Started in year 1985 for
Narmada River, which flows
through the states of Gujarat,
Madhya Pradesh and
Maharashtra.
 Medha Patker, Baba Amte,
adivasis, farmers,
environmentalists and human
rights activists were the active
participants.
 It was a social movement
against a number of large
dams being built across
the Narmada River.
Beej Bachao Aandolan
 In the late 1980s, the movement was
initiated by the group of activists of
Hemwal Valley of Tehri and led by a
farmer and social activist Vijay Jardhari.
 ‘Beej Bachao Andolan’ (Save the Seeds
Movement) was started from
Jardhargaon of Tehri district,
Uttarakhand.
 Because of the adverse effects of Green
revolution, many indigenous practises
and seeds have been lost.
 Earlier there were more than 3000
varieties of rice in Uttrakhand before
Green Revolution, now there are only
320.
